Carla Coon (carlacoon) | 6 comments AJ, I wrote my first thriller and had trouble with that. I wanted to set a mood not spring into action. (I still hope it grabbed the reader via curiosity.) In my second book, Back to the Glen, (soon to be released) though, I've done just that and began with a chase scene.

Hi Carla

I think it's good to try out different techniques - which of your two openings do you think (and your beta readers) works best?
Cheers

vicki lee zell (vlzbooks) | 5 comments I write openings with a twist. A twist that gets you interested from the get go. A twist that twists and twists then comes undone little by little. Check out my thriller, Identity Crisis by VLZ and see for yourself. Psssst... I have a new thriller coming in the Fall, The hut in the woods.

Feather Stone (feather_stone) | 3 comments Hello: I'm hoping this group will help me in polishing my current WIP. The first page / chapter is vital to enticing a reader to continue. I want to ensure I've hit the mark with Forbidden's beginning. If anyone is interested in doing a critique on the first 15 pages, please let me know. Here is the synopsis:
Within hours of arrival in the Middle East city of Samarra, Eliza Leigh MacKay and fifteen Americans are plunged into a desperate struggle for survival. Eliza, alone, survives the massacre. Corrupt Mayor Aamir initiates a cover-up.

Police captain, Hashim Sharif, a devout Muslim, is forced to become the keeper of the impetuous MacKay woman. When she escapes and is cornered by mercenaries, Sharif discovers she is no shrinking violet and awakens to his deep affection for her.

Sharif and Eliza are immersed into the shadowy world of espionage, corruption, murder, and kidnapping. From shabby back alleys, a crumbling mosque, mountain caves, to the splendor of the marble columns in the federal building, Captain Sharif and the CIA hunt for the American’s killers. While hunting vile killers, their most intense struggle is facing their internal demons. The cost of living in the past is robbing them of all hope for realizing their dreams.

As Captain Sharif’s investigation progresses, he and Eliza become the hunted. Compelled to trust each other, they hold back feelings they’ve considered forbidden. When he and the CIA discover who was behind the massacre, it hits Sharif with deadly force - as if shot by his own AK-47.

Feather Stone takes you on a richly textured epic adventure through stunning landscape and into the minds of desperate men. A strong cast of characters will grab and immerse you into a plot full of treachery, and passion that refuses to be silenced.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Feather, your post should be in a more appropriate location, say, "Self-Promotion". Your post has nothing to do with the thread's subject.
