Sidney Sheldon's Mistress of the Game question

My mother read a book sometime between the 80's and 90's, that came with a set of cassette tapes. She is Japanese and was trying to learn English at the time. From what she told me the book may have only been sold in Japan, for people trying to learn English. The book was written in English, I remember reading it when I was small.
I'll try to remember as best as I can the plot of the book.
It was about a Japanese man. His family was rich and they were murdered when he was little, I believe it was in a plane crash. Most likely involved a conspiracy with his fathers company. As the son grows up to become a teenager, young man, he begins to unravel things and someone ends up trying to kill him. He of course starts running for his life.
I want to say the book was written by Sidney Sheldon, but I'm not 100% sure.
If anyone knows anything I would greatly appreciate the input. I have googled the heck out of trying to find this book.
