When the Hokule'a sailed to Tahiti everyone on board did not know it was going to be the last time they were going to see Eddie. It seems to me that you have to be brave and strongly connected to the ocean and to your surroundings . If I was on the Hokule'a with Eddie when it was storming, I would have let captain Nainoa know that it's better to be safe then sorry and to turn the canoe around. I would have convinced the crew to set sail the next morning if the weather was nicer.
Big wave surfing at Waimea Bay seems pretty gnarly. I can't imagine dropping in to a twenty foot wave with lots of mana (power) and hearing the ocean roaring behind me. Only the big wave riders are invited every year to compete in the Eddie contest. It must be a lot of fun to see all your old friends and compete with them in this legendary contest. You can hear the sound of the boulders in the bay clashing and the sand screaming as the surfers describe the wave at Waimea Bay.
When Captain Cook so called discovered Hawaii there were all ready native Hawaiian's living on the islands. How can you discover something when someone else was there before you? Captain Cook brought all the Haole's here. They were crooks and stole all the land and everything was about money. I wish that we lived in the old days were money didn't matter and we had to live off the land or trade, life would be so simple. I would be a really good fisherman and diver and I would catch dinner for my ohana everyday. We would eat good for free.
