October 4 is World Animal Day. Your challenge is to read a book with animals in it. It can be a non-fiction title like Wild Birds: North America's Most Unique Birds or a fiction title that includes an animal like The Celery Stalks at Midnight.

Let us know what you've read in the comments below.

Good luck!

message 2: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 57 comments would marley and me by john grogan or dewey by vicki Myron count as animal books even though both have people in the story?

message 3: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments Well, dang. I just finished The fourteenth goldfish. It sounds like it's about animals, a goldfish, but it's not. I think I will read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I've never read any of the Narnia series and at 65+ years of age, don't you think it's about time I did?

Yes. Yes, I do.

Lisa - Absolutely. They count.
Debbie - You should give it a try, there's lots of talking animals in that one.
Greg - I agree with your agreement.

message 6: by Greg (new)

Greg (danceyeah) | 289 comments I'll be reading Meg by Steve Alten. Technically, it's an extinct animal and the story is entirely fanciful (if you like violent fantasies), but it's still an animal.

Yes! You really need to read the Narnia books. I think you will really enjoy them.

Definitely!

message 11: by Becky (new)

Becky | 280 comments I'm hoping to read And the Ocean Was Our Sky for this challenge.

And I agree about The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I need to take time to re-read that series. (Hey, let's do a re-read your favorite book challenge!)

Greg (danceyeah) | 289 comments Becky wrote: "(Hey, let's do a re-read your favorite book challenge!)"

That would be a very long challenge for me...too many favorites!

message 13: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 120 comments I am trying to decide between these three:

Old Yeller
The Wind in the Willows
Watership Down

message 14: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I vote for Watership Down. Although if you want something that is a fairly quick read, you can't beat Wind in the Willows.

A very long challenge for me since so many of my favorites are HUGE either as books or as series.

message 18: by Greg (new)

Greg (danceyeah) | 289 comments I finished this challenge. (Read most of the book on the 4th, which I thought was challenge-appropriate). I read Meg by Steve Alten.

My review of the book is essentially the same as my review of the movie:

This was an awesome shark book. It was not an awesome other kind of book. It was an awesome shark book.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 767 comments I just finished reading Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH to my girls. I'd never read it. It wasn't really what I was expecting but it was fun.

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I really like that one!

I saw it first as the movie "The Rats of NIMH" and really enjoyed it. Then I learned it was a book and read it and enjoyed it.

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I have finished reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. It was delightful! Now I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I listened to the audio book which was narrated by Michael York. He was wonderful!

Nice! I looked for audiobooks of Narnia some years ago, but they only had abridged ones that totally hacked the stories.

message 24: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 255 comments I read The Goodbye Witch, a cozy mystery. There's a macaw, two mice and a dog that are witch's familiars and can talk. There are also two cats and two more dogs in the story.

Elizabeth (bethsmash) | 1225 comments Mod
Fun fact about the The Secret of NIMH movie. They originally recorded everyone saying Mrs. Frisby, but were worried that the company that owned Frisbee would sue, so they recut the audio so it sounds like they're saying Brisby.

message 26: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments The credits say “Brisby” too.

The library has it through Overdrive and it said it was the full unabridged version or I'd have not gone that way.

That was back before companies learned the power of unintended advertising in film and TV. Legally, it wouldn't have held up because the standard of "if they might be confused for..." was still considered. Of course, whether it held up was irrelevant. You can file a suit for anything and the party being sued still has to pay lawyers to answer the suit.

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I haven’t figured out how to use Overdrive for audiobooks. What are you supposed to listen to them on?

message 30: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 181 comments Audrey wrote: "I haven’t figured out how to use Overdrive for audiobooks. What are you supposed to listen to them on?"

If I'm at work, I often just listen to them on my computer from the site without downloading. Otherwise, I just download them to to my phone and listen to them on that -- all within the Overdrive app.

message 31: by Greg (new)

Greg (danceyeah) | 289 comments Audrey wrote: "I haven’t figured out how to use Overdrive for audiobooks. What are you supposed to listen to them on?"

I use a couple different apps on my phone. The overdrive app is pretty cool, itself, letting you search the library's content, directly, and easily download the books. Then, from within the app, you can listen to downloaded books. It has cool features like speed control.

If you have a different app you like to use to listen (I use one called Listen Audiobook Player) it can also play the files. In the overdrive settings you can see the download location for the overdrive books, and point your app to that place to read the files. It does take a little more tech savvy to do, but the overdrive app has most of the features I like, anyway.

message 33: by Greg (new)

Greg (danceyeah) | 289 comments Audrey wrote: "I don’t have a smartphone, so that limits the options."

Indeed. There are other options, however. For instance, you can download the books to the computer application, and listen there. You can also burn audio books onto CDRs, or CDRWs and listen on a standard CD player.

Donna | 72 comments I've read 20 books this month...you'd think there would be an animal in at least one....but no. Not yet.

message 36: by Jennie (new)

Jennie | 43 comments I read "Short Investigations" by Clair Poulson, includes bulls, horses, and a dog.
I also read "Sleeping Secrets" by G.G. Vandagriff. There's a dog in it and I read "Five Little Monkeys with Nothing to Do" and it has monkeys.

Audrey,

You can use a tablet, smart phone or a computer. With a computer you can either just listen to your audiobook while streaming, or download it and listen to it. If you go with the download option, there will be some software you'll need to install with your computer. If you use a tablet or smart phone, you'll have to download the Overdrive App. You can then download the eAudiobook directly to the app and listen there. If you get stuck you can visit any Salt Lake County Library with your device and ask a librarian for help.

Hope that's helpful.

Audry Whoops, I replied to the above comment, before I saw that you didn't have a smart phone. Do you have a tablet or laptop or computer?

You're halfway through, maybe one of the next books you'll read will have one! (Also 20 books is amazing!!!)

message 40: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I bought an iPod Touch specifically for listening to audio books. Some ebook readers (as opposed to tablets on which you can use an app to read ebooks) have a sound component allowing you to listen to audio books. On your computer, you can listen with the Overdrive applicaton.

message 41: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I do have a tablet; I think it has Overdrive. And a plain old laptop.

Audrey,

If you want you can take your device into your local library and talk to the librarians they can help you get set up and going on it.

message 43: by Greg (new)

Greg (danceyeah) | 289 comments Audrey wrote: "I do have a tablet; I think it has Overdrive. And a plain old laptop."

Either of those will work. The app on either is fairly intuitive. Personally, I would lean towards the tablet. I highly recommend getting a set of bluetooth headphones, in whichever style you prefer, and connecting them up to the tablet. That way you don't have to carry the tablet around wherever you go. As long as it's close, you have a good book in your ears!

message 44: by Debbie (last edited Oct 17, 2018 08:15AM) (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I can't stand headphones so I got a small waterproof bluetooth speaker. I have hearing aids which are bluetooth, but I found I don't like the sound playing right in my ears so I don't use that feature. But Greg is right. Not having to pack around the tablet is a real benefit because you get some real mobility. You can even set the tablet close by, but go around your yard doing gardening and still listen to your books! Plus, if your tablet is a tad low on battery, you can leave it wherever it needs to get plugged in, but you can still move around.

We're halfway through the month. Keep looking for books with animals in it. Let me know if you need recommendations.

message 46: by Tanya (new)

Tanya | 36 comments I read Pet Sematary, but that turned out to be less about animals than I expected it to be. I might have to do another quick paperback with animals in it before the end of the month.

message 47: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 55 comments bwahahaha I wasn't sure I'd make the challenge happen this month, but I managed it after all! I finally read Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Vol. 1: The Crucible which features one of my favorite pop culture cats.... Salem! Who was wonderful!

A truly excellent book is The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, a Newbery winner so it's a pretty fast read. A story about a little girl and a gorilla that is based on a true story.

There are animals in it right? Like, don't they come back from the dead and terrorize people? Because that counts.

HAHA!! I agree, Elizabeth. Even if they are dead, they still count. I have to agree with Debbie, also. The One and Only Ivan is a must read! :)
