I think that in THIS case, the discomfort was essential in regards to the characters' individual personalities. (view spoiler)[ The demon could only take over by preying on a human's weakness--the biggest weakness the father had was his inability to please his girlfriend sexually, and provide for her financially. These are the things he most wanted control of (hide spoiler)].
