I really want to like this book since people rave about it. I read the first chapter and it was just heavy with thy, thou, thee.... Oooff! It's heavy with flowerly language and gratuitous adverbs. I had to roll my eyes and I couldn't get into the story. Is it just the conversations that are stuffy? Does it get better?

It just feels cheesy, like renaissance fair roleplaying speech.

I should probably mention that I'm a big sci-fi/dystopian fan but not a fan of Lord of the Rings/Game of Thrones type of fantasy-speak. I do occasionally like to try out new genres and I thought this steam-punk type of book would do the trick.

Hi Rossy! The first time I picked up the kindle sample of the book, I had the exact same reaction as you did. I was instantly turned off by the thees and thous, the use of the 'royal we', and the fact that all the names are really long and nearly impossible to pronounce (even for a typical fantasy novel, which is saying something).

I'm actually glad I stuck with it and gave the book another try because I did get used to the language. Maia is a great character and I really did enjoy the story. That said, despite the fact that there is the occasional dirigible, I would not really classify this book as steampunk. It is more in the realm of fantasy court intrigue, where the focus is primarily on political maneuverings with fairly minimal action. I personally liked the book and typically enjoy the fantasy genre (though I actually didn't like LotR or GoT, which maybe makes me an outlier). But given your preferences, it may not be for you, as it doesn't really have the action/adventure quality of a lot of steampunk or sci-fi. Hope that helps!

I found the beginning a bit meh... but soon I fell in love with him and his new world. It was a breath of fresh air from so many of the other books I have read. It helped me understand some of the political moves made in the old royal courts in Europe and Asia. I creepy and unhappy way of life.
