Newbie Need Help w Hugo Winner

I want to read the 2018 Novel Winner of the Hugo Awards! I see it is #3 in the "Broken Earth Series". Do I have to read the 1st 2 books first to understand what is going on? Tks for any help, David

You might want to read the first two- they both won the Novel Hugo Awards as well in 2016 and 2017. It's the first time a trilogy has won in successive years.
