Hopefully at this point many of you will have started reading or already read The Hate U Give - what are your initial thoughts or reflections so far?
As I read I have been contemplating the relationship Starr has between who she identifies as in her home and neighbourhood versus when she's at school - a conflict my white privilege protects me from. In fact, conflict is a central theme of the novel - the conflict between whether or not Starr speaks out or how she feels about keeping her boyfriend a secret.
“I can't change where I come from or what I've been through, so why should I be ashamed of what makes me, me?”
Are there any conflicts that are particularly resonating with you as you read?
