SOLVED. Zombie/end of world plot. A plant called blue stem was planted by the government to help with an epidemic, but it caused a "zombie" outbreak. [s]

Narrator is female, she has a boyfriend of sorts named Smoke. She also has a small daughter (named Ruthie?) who has some special abilities that I can't remember. This is a series of books, maybe from 2010-2012. The "zombies" eat strips of flesh from people's backs. The narrator was a victim of the "zombies" and survived, which is unusual.
