Shannon Fay (bottomofastairwell) | 156 comments I noticed that this author's page seems to be a bit of a mess:

https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

clearly, there are foreign language editions that need to be combined with english editions (I notice that a few of the books are also broken up into separate volumes, so that's a different story), but this page needs cleaning up, because it's showing 30 distinct works, and I definitely don't think she's written THAT many books.

Anyone want to tackle this? I would try, but 1, I don't speak any other language than english, so i have no way of knowing if a book is a different language edition, or one of the smaller volumes, and 2, i'm still very new to being a librarian, and i'm scared to mess things up.

Alternately, if someone could help me tidy it up, that'd be great, it's just driving me nuts

Arenda | 26450 comments I've done some cleaning up to start with

- merged a German duplicate
- combined some foreign editions
- there were several listing for an Amazon series page. These are not valid listings for GR. I've removed them.

There will remain a lot of books, more than just the number of books originally published in English, because:
- some of the books were also published in episodes. The French edition of After #1 was published in 10 episodes (and also as a complete book). There are a total of 19 editions that are only an episode.
- there are French (extrait offert) and German (XXL-Leseprobe) preview editions, 9 in total.
Editions that contain only a part should not be combined with the complete book.

What needs some work still are primarily French editions, that might be half books, but need either researching or someone who knows the books very well.
- the Landon series (Nothing More/Nothing Less)
- Before
- Between

I'll make a note to come back for those when I'm up to researching these titles.

I also noticed that a lot of titles don't follow GR's title policy.

Shannon Fay (bottomofastairwell) | 156 comments also, even for the books that are broken up into multiple volumes, they ought to be organized so that when you look at the series, you can see that ALL those pieces and different language editions/episodes, etc. are part of the same series.
I know there are other books that have a similar problem, like wool, by Hugh howey, which started as a serial thing, but then was later published by a larger publishing house as an omnibus. and that is dealt with by the serial being a separate book from the omnibus version if you search wool, but when you click on the SERIES of wool you see the individual serials, and then the omnibus that contains all five of the pieces at the bottom of the series page. And then, also at the bottom of the series page, there are 2 more "books", where the WHOLE Wool omnibus was broken into 2 pieces for an alternate language edition. perhaps it could be done somewhat like this.

because this author's page is a straight mess, and it's driving me nuts, but i still don't know how to fix it.

Arenda | 26450 comments It is a LOT of work, especially when it is an author one is not familiar with. Also, new books/editions are being added all the time.

I've combined/fixed the editions of the Stars/Karina & Kael series.
I've fixed the Landon series, separating Italian editions that only contain half of the original book.

You might want to look at the series page: https://www.goodreads.com/series/list..., and click through for each series.

Obviously there is/was a lot of work to be done for this author.
However, I don't agree with you that the series page for Hugh Howey is a good example, and I've even read part of that series.

Arenda | 26450 comments Before (published in French as two separate volumes) and Between are now also done.

Also separated other editions that are a translation of only half a book and were incorrectly combined with a complete book.

Also good to know: for translations where the original book is published in two parts, the numbering of the series will also differ from the original numbering. This was also causing translations to be combined with the wrong book (only based on the number).

Shannon Fay (bottomofastairwell) | 156 comments thank you for your help. I think I will take this and move it to the projects page.

I'm not familiar with this author, but while i was looking up a book of hers, i noticed that her page was a MESS, so i figured someone should do something to clean it up, but since I'm still so new to being a librarian, I don't know how to do many of these things, and i'm scared of messing anything up.

That's what I did. I don't know what you expect that still needs to be done.

Arenda | 26450 comments I see there are some new editions that were imported. I'll combine these.

ETA: Editions that were imported yesterday are now combined with the matching other editions.

well i'm still pretty new to being a librarian, so i'm not sure what all can be done. that's all.

her page clearly needed the help, and since so many of the editions were languages i don't speak, i figured i'd just dump this thread here and leave it, that way other people who might speak those languages could help.

but if there's nothing more to be done that's great! thanks so much.
