My dad used to play RO records a lot during the my childhood. For a young lad growing up in the 1980's, I was more taken with the modern sounds of synth, electro & hard rock bands of the day, than to give two hoots for what I thought, back then, was just another boring, old fashioned crooner. Thus, with me old man playing (and singing along too!) his RO records regularly, I (and my siblings) not only developed a strong loathing for anything by poor ol' Roy, we used to dread it, when dad starting singing along too! I wanted modern sounds, lot cool hairdo, synths and good beat, and cool looking band members....aye...I knew sod all back then!Funny how things change though...not only do appreciate his music now, I admire his incredible singing voice (unlike my old man attempts to mimic him!). Hardly surprising then, that so few RO songs have been covered, how can anybody match the power, beauty, range and emotion, that only Roy could produce? Even Elvis said he'd never perform on stage after Roy had been on before him!

I absolutely love Roy Orbison and so this was just SO incredibly hard for me. I'm still not happy or all that sure about having to decide between almost all of them so as to be able to put them into any kind of point-scoring order and I've changed my Top Four choices SO many times now that I've actually lost count! ...After Tim ...

The winner this week, in a very close finish, Tim, with It's Over. A pint behind, and grabbing second spot, Tech with In Dreams, and a further point behind but still a place on the podium for Collette, and Only The Lonely, Well done those three.
As for myself, I mentioned remembering him from my mother's record collection all those years ago. I started listening to one or two tracks and it didn't take me long to work out, some distant memories are best left just as memories, sorry :-(

I must admit I don't think that some of the soundtracks have the best sound to them. It could just be me? - but many of them sound to be of a certain point of time in musical history that has long since passed by - and I remember pretty much always thinking this of Roy Orbison.
It's his distinctive and melodic voice that continues to make me a fan ;o>

Leaving aside the post 'Blue Velvet' career revival material, a lot is rooted in that pre-Beatles American sound. As you say Suzy, it's that voice which lifts them above the pack. But the best of Roy, including 'In Dreams' and 'it's Over' somehow transcend their time to become eternal.
I was never a fan and apart from the Wilburys, I haven’t anything by him, but I watched the documentary ‘In Dreams’ with my sister and was very impressed. It’s very well done, sad though.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Roy-Orbison-...

The big news this week is - I have got my youtube account back!!! Google sent me an email to just ensure that I was aware I was a numpty (I never doubted it), then supplied an idiot proof link to reactivate my account. Thanks a mill to the Duke for taking care of the playlists while I simmered and seethed.
