Christine and Marcus have been wanting a baby for quite a long time but have been unable to conceive. After much discussion they decide to use a donor from a reputable sperm bank. The man's biography and photograph are perfect and Christine quickly becomes pregnant. Two months later while the happy couple are watching television there is a news story about a serial killer who has recently been apprehended and the culprit is the spitting image of their donor. Understandably Christine and Marcus are stunned and frightened that their child might inherit violent tendencies but it is also possible this man is not their donor. The sperm bank refuses to break confidentiality and will not tell them the name of their donor. Christine decides to take matters into her own hands once she sees how adamant Marcus has become that they need to terminate the pregnancy immediately. She know the only way to know for sure is to confront the alleged murderer in prison.
I am normally a big fan of Scottolini's books but this one fell short for me. It had an intriguing plot with the 'is he' or 'isn't he' the father and a serial killer but it became a bit far-fetched when Christine suddenly became part of the man's legal team. I know this is a petty thing but every time I heard "Christine made a mental note" (and believe me it was a lot!!) I wanted to yell "Just write it down for heaven's sake!" Marcus is a real piece of work and so unlikable. Definitely not my favorite from this author.
