- Kimberly Mira "Kim" Victoria
A 13-year-old half-black girl struggling with Asperger's syndrome and chronic depression. After a fight with her mother places her siblings in temporary danger, she is consequently sent to Shady Magnolia, a mental institution, for treatment. As she's beginning to lose her will to live, though, an overnight encounter with a mysterious being leads to her momentary liberation - and straight into an extraterrestrial conspiracy spanning centuries.

- Laurel Alexis Denise
A sixteen-year-old Caucasian girl currently residing with her fourth set of foster parents. Due to severe mistreatment she received from her birth parents as a young child, she has been in-and-out of different foster families for around 5 years. However, after learning her newest guardians are rogue scientists who have been performing illegal and unethical experiments, she slowly realizes she may be witnessing part of something far bigger than anyone could ever comprehend.

- Hajime
A grey, blob-like mass, around a foot each wide and long, of alien origins. Laurel's newest foster parents found it through initially-uncertain means and conducted an experiment that transferred the consciousness of an unidentified teenage boy into it, rendering it sentient. (Note: Hajime's name and true origins actually have highly-complex backstories surrounding them, but I won't be getting into them right now.)
