SOLVED. Fantasy/Mystery book set in Ireland (I think) about a man who has psychic/paranormal powers. As the story gathers pace the people around him are affected by these powers. Spoilers ahead. [s]

Unfortunately I am having real trouble thinking about how to describe this book without including major details/spoilers from the book itself, apologies for this in advance.

The book starts with a young guy who is swimming at a lake with his friends and one of his friends drowns (I believe he gets his foot caught in a shopping trolley). He then meets an old lady and strikes up a friendship/some sort of relationship with her and then she dies aswell. Finally i remember that he meets a woman who he falls for, he realises that she is being domestically abused by her partner but he also realises that everyone he is getting close to is dying. I cant remember the exact details of the ending but I am sure that he sacrifices his life in some sort of way to save this woman and her child.

I read this book about 10 years ago whilst I was a teenager and have regretted not being able to remember it ever since, as it was a truly amazing/powerful story and I am desperate to read it again.

Im hoping I have provided some genius with enough details to identify the book title and author, to which i will be truly grateful.
