SOLVED. College novel w/ poor character living in snowy attic. [s]

I remember reading a book in which a poor college student hangs out with wealthy friends and hides his poverty. This comes to a head when he ends up moving into some drafty attic to save money. He doesn't tell anyone. The attic lets in snow and the character is sick and feels as if he's going to die, and then maybe he's rescued or recovers. I believe the novel is British.
