I'll be honest, I struggled to stay with Lavinia in the beginning. Something about her rubbed me the wrong way, which can sometimes make for a difficult read. I'd already judged a Reading Review War book review debate on the book, so I had a little idea of what I was in for, and I opted to stick with the reading - if for no other reason than to find out what some of the debate meant.
By the fourth chapter, I was hooked. I could see Lavinia's impending doom, but that morbid, human trait of having to know how it played out kept me turning the pages to see what mess she'd get into next, and how she'd get out of it.
By the eighth chapter, I was staying up late to continue reading, because I needed to know what was around the next corner for our dear anti-heroine.
And, without trying to give away any spoilers, the ending of the book was pure genius. Sam wasn't so fond of it, (my daughter really gets worked up about books that don't wrap everything up in a neat little package - we're working on her understanding an author's reasons for doing things this way) but I found it truly brilliant.
