Justyne | 4 comments Me too! I just joined this group but it looks like there's not a lot of activity that goes on.... Anway, I'm reading Rise of the Sea Witch (an Ursula/Little Mermaid re-telling).

This one is not what I was hoping for so far, I'm not generally a fan of present tense writing and the mechanics are little strange. How does a mermaid sigh and create a cloud of air bubbles but have gills at the same time? How do you sit down "heavily" underwater?? Maybe I'm just thinking about it too much, but it keeps pulling me out of the fantasy every time, lol. I'm only a few chapters in so far so I'll keep reading to see if the story at least can redeem it.

Deep Blue sounds interesting! (at least from the description on goodreads) I haven't read a good sisterhood story in a while, so I might have to pick that one up later.

Brooke Clevenger | 2 comments Yes not much activity at all....what a bummer!! And I have to say I've never read any mermaid novels, haven't really read a lot of fantasy to be honest. I'll have to give it a whirl though!!

message 6: by Justyne (new)

Justyne | 4 comments ^Leigh Bardugo yes!!
Update: I put down Rise of the Sea Witch for now. It just wasn't holding my attention. I moved onto Freaks and Other Family by L. McBride (which I just finished) and Reflection from the Twisted Tales series.

Kellie Davies (httpwwwgoodreadscomkelliemdavies) | 1 comments Hi everyone,
I joined this group a few weeks back but have had a book released - no time!
I wanted to thrown a question out there: What is your fine line between the mechanics of YA and adult fiction?

message 9: by Justyne (new)

Justyne | 4 comments For me, what makes a YA book YA is that there is always a key personal struggle of the protagonists (and sometimes also their friends). Typically, the struggle they go through in the book will change them by forcing them in to difficult situations where they might question their identity and they will have to decide what it is that will truly define them as a person. Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartmen and Graceling by Kristin Cashore are prime examples of this. Of course, some books are more in the gray area than others, but seeing a character grow and go from being an innocent/naive/troubled young person to a mature, self-aware and confident young adult is what brings me back to the YA genre again and again. Age is flexible to me, everyone matures at a different rate based on their life experiences and their environment, so I have not viewed age as being a 'line in the sand.' What would make something NOT YA, would probably be something that doesn't have that personal struggle or there is no clear growth in the main character. Seraphina by Rachel Hartman comes to mind, Seraphina herself does not go through a lot of changes, what changes is more her relationships with those around her. Fire by Kristin Cashore is also one that I'm not sure fits as well into the YA title. The story starts when the protaginst has already been faced with those struggles that made her into who she is and she is older now (I think 18-20?) but now she is having to face the world as an adult and still stay true to herself. Others may agree/disagree but that is how I see the YA genre. It's not to say that any of the books mentioned are bad, they are all great books!

message 10: by Isabell (new)

Isabell W. | 2 comments Hi!
I read YA books all the time and I've read a few adult novels. I'd say that as soon as you start adding a whole lot of strong vocabulary and information, that's a crossover into an adult novel. YA stands for Young Adult and young adults are teens. Teens have very little attention spans and need to read something with little resistance. I learned recently, that YA authors don't even use semi-colons because teens are confused by them and they're too distracting.
I also think that once you get into areas like sex and very strong language, then you are crossing into adult novel territory. YA's almost ALWAYS have romance, but it needs to be without the sex part and a little more on the innocent side or you're losing the YA feel.
Hope that helps!

Uh. You are DEFINITELY NOT the only one. In my local library, there is one person waiting in line for it before me, and I want to reread the other books in the Dark Artifices. I'll be able to read those in a week. I know it's, like, forbidden, but I ship Emma and Julian!!

Okay, literal chills while reading this I'm soo exited! Unfortunately my local library has decided to wait for next years budget before buying it...! I don't know how I am to survive... I'm thinking of re-reading them aswell, which is not hard since her writing and stories are soo complex and lovely. I definitely ship them aswell, I mean, who wouldn't!?? I'm worried what will happen, though, you never know what might come when Cassandra's deciding the story's outcome...

After reading my first Sarah J Maas book, I can say she is an awesome author and her work is well worth the read. There is a bit of sex throughout her series' but they are still great.
