ABANDONED. Sci-Fi Series: man and talking dog walking on two legs

The man and the dog kind of wander the earth getting into local trouble and help solve problems. In one the man pretends to be a monk at the beginning, I think. The dog is genetically engineered, perhaps. There are short stories and a novel or two. They are funny. In far future, maybe, generally dystopian I think. Help!
