I promised a review and here it is "not much to say about this book. It was not the best sci-fi novel I have read nor the worst. The characters were powerful enough to keep you moving through the book and even order the 2nd in the series. But, I don't like science fiction books, such as The Eye of the World, dune and The Lord of the Rings in which the characters seem to spend most of their time talking, walking and/or being chased."
I've just finished it and, I must admit, that it won me round. I wouldn't say its the best book I've ever read and I think I still prefer Dune . But, that's because I have a soft spot for science fiction. As for Shane, I really liked the mother (she had spirit and reminded me a little of Mrs March in[ book:Little Women|1934] and even grew to like Shane. Although, wouldn't say he's my favourite literary character. I like its sparse writing style and it was an achievement to tell such a story in so short a book. And the kid nots s annoying as I remember in the film.
This month books The Haunting of Hill House and Something Wicked This Way Comes have arrived. Looking forward to reading these, even though horror is not my favourite genre.
This is not your typical horror...this is good literary creepiness. SWTWC is chock full of symbolism and is an English major's dream come true.
I've always thought of Bradbury's writing as "literary" although he's always pigeon-holed under sci-fi. Dandelion Wine is an excellent example of almost the opposite of SWTWC. It's full of hope and expectations. Very well written.
That is also on my to-read list. I once read a short story in college by Bradbury that was freaky, but I can't remember the title. It was about two kids and a bedroom that transformed. Can anyone help me out on this one?
Well I tried Something Wicked This Way Comes but gave up. The story didn't grab me at all. The writing style bored me to tears.
well I've finished it. I really liked this book. The characters feel real. The descriptions of place are amazing. Hill house is a unhappy house. As the story develops, we find out why. Several characters, all with their own issues, enter the house to study it. Frightening events occur. But the most frightening thing is the way the characters get drawn to the house and away from each other.
Read the The Handmaid's Tale really enjoyed this. It was well written and thought provoking, everything that a good book should.Must admit that I gave up on 1984. I never could get on withGeorge Orwell's fiction. I Prefer his non-fiction. I loved hisHomage to Catalonia.
I have read Ender's Game already. I really liked this book and look forward to chatting to you about it.
It seems that there are quite a few copies of A Prayer for Owen Meany in my local library. I shall try and pick one up tomorrow.

Looks like quite an intense read. It's quite a thick book too. So, my glad the I've read Enders game. This book may take some time to get through
