ART is definitely the star of this book.
I like how the author depicts the personality of AIs.
There was a sequence where their shuttle got hacked and there were three AIs fighting the virus: the murderbot, the ART, and the SecUnit on board. The SecUnit panicked and fired all the alarms instead of being helpful, Murderbot made quick decisions and ART request fully control. Afterward, SecUnit was going to check ART's credential and "almost got itself deleted"😂

I definitely liked ART, and found myself missing him in the remaining two novellas. ART and Murderbot almost had a Holmes/Watson dynamic going -- one being way smarter and bored -- but the analogy doesn't quite hold: Murderbot is very much its own person, and that's a good thing.

I've finally listened to all four novellas, and I think the series ended really, really well.

A lot of people do seem to be using self-aware machines recently: last year's Barbary Station, The Clockwork Dynasty, etc.

I suspect the hat tip should go to the late Iain M. Banks for pushing ship and station Minds in his Culture novels. Although one can't discount the real world influences, such as Watson, AlphaGo, and other machine learning systems.

It’s definitely very different from “robot “ that we are familiar with..
Remember when murder bot first met a “pet” robot Mimi, it disliked her because the human shape is unnecessary and only for human’ s preference. Murderbot kinda get away from its own criticism by repeatedly stating that its organic part is necessary to its job.

Human build ship to sail, and they build robot with mixed purpose, both practical and emotional.

Funny that this was also reflected in machines attitudes towards human. Mimi’s critical choices are driven by “humans are my friends “ while ART and Murderbot are much more practical.(they treat revolt as absurd idea because they are designed to serve.)
