I read it about 5-6 years ago I believe and I think it had a female author.

The story begins with a brother imprisoned by his sister trying to turn him to evil the setting is a world between earth and the afterlife where good and evil fight. The good forces are made up of various holy people who are transported to the world and the male protagonist escapes his sister and makes his way to safety finding a woman who newly arrived in the world. He is hesitant to train her fearing she'll be possessed.
