ABANDONED. a number of "romance" novels in New Orleans written in 40s I think.

This was not a series. Just a number of very readable stories of New Orleans. I seem to recall one title with [upstairs window:] in it. (Helpful, no?) The author's first name may have been Katherine or Kathleen. I'm pretty sure I was about 8 or 9 when I started reading them which would make it 1948 or 49. I seem to remember waiting for new ones as they became available at the stationary store that had a small rental library. They got books in that the public library didn't bother with.
It's where I first learned about Mardi Gras and "crewes" and shotgun houses.

I used to work at a historic research center in New Orleans. When I worked there, we did research via mail, email, and telephone if the research wasn't terribly extensive. They might be able to help you. When I worked there, the staff was knowledgeable and helpful.
