Susan watched her feet as she wandered aimlessly through the park. She had been left at home, her mother at work and her brother off with one of his mundane friends. For about an hour, she had sat twiddling her thumbs before she finally became stir crazy. It was beautiful outside, since she had finally gotten used to the New York summer heat after spending years in the cool shade of the Black Forest, it couldn't hurt to head outside for a while. With careful footing, she pondered on the fact that her brother had a friend that she didn't share with him. Their whole lives they had tended to stick in the same friend groups, or they had been alone with each other. Deciding the feeling in her stomach was over-protectiveness rather than loneliness, Susan took a moment to look up and take in her surroundings. Other New Yorkers were taking advantage of the day... along with one kind of city dweller she thought she was safe from in the daylight. Heading in her direction was a glowering young man with marks covering nearly every inch of exposed skin on his body. For the briefest of moments, her steps faltered as her thoughts raced. She could either turn tail or act like he wasn't there. Her instincts told her to run in the other direction, but the rational side of her told her to act as if nothing had happened.
Breathing in a deep breath, Susan removed her gaze from the Shadowhunter, casually trying to list over to the side of the path furthest away from him.
Her breath was held as the Shadowhunter passed. He had looked at her. Well, she couldn't quite be certain because his eyes were practically closed in the bright sunlight, but she had felt his gaze resting on her. But he did pass. He hadn't stopped her, hadn't tried anything, and she couldn't only assume it was because of his age. Most younger Shadowhunters didn't recognize a Stormway like their parents might. Either that, or he didn't think it was wise to attempt murder within a crowd of mundanes.
Feeling a bit more at ease, Susan released the breath that she had been holding, some of the tension leaving her shoulders. She was home free -- at least until she heard a rather colorful collection of words muttered behind her. He hadn't realized his mistake had he? Pausing for a brief moment before she would break into a full out sprint, Susan took the time to take a glance over her shoulder to see if he was in pursuit.
The Shadowhunter wasn't looking at her, though. Following his gaze, she caught sight of a demon hidden behind a tree and her lip curled back ever so slightly in a grimace. There weren't many demons who had the ability to come out during the day, unable to handle the suns rays. The ones that could were not very fun to deal with. She and Leo had fought a handful back in Germany when they had nothing better to do.
Now she did have something better to do, like get out of there before the Shadowhunter turned his attention back to her. She had noticed the creature eyeing up the mundane and for a second time she was torn between two options, but this time it wasn't just about saving herself. It was about saving someone else. Biting the inside of her cheek, she carefully slipped into a nearby tourist group to conceal herself in the crowd. Her hand crept behind her back and under her shirt, resting on the hilt of a dagger she had hidden in the waistband of her jeans.
She would rather have the Shadowhunter be able to do his job, but if not... she would intervene. Marks or not, she still had the same mandate as every other Nephilim.
((Yeah, I usually give what I get and it is just so much better when it's more detail, instead of just, like, three words.))
Susan kept her gaze trained on the scene before her. She had a hard time deciding which enemy she should be watching more closely. The moment the demon began to creep closer to the unaware mundane, however, all thought of self preservation seemed to fly out the window. She was about to remove her blade and advance on the creature when the Shadowhunter started moving as well. He was just as much a demon killer as she was, he could handle it. The scowl that seemed to be perpetually placed on his face showed that he clearly had enough determination to take down the monster. The Shadowhunter boy was taking his sweet time, though and she wasn't sure if she liked it. Making a quick decision, she removed her hand from her weapon and advanced towards the sleeping woman. The least she could do was remove her from harms way. The Shadowhunter had the luxury of killing the demon while hiding behind a glamour. If Susan whipped out a blade in front of a bunch of mundanes, she got the feeling she wouldn't be able to do a whole lot of help.
Crouching beside the woman, she spoke loudly enough to wake her up, knowing so much as shaking her shoulder might be a little unsettling. "Excuse me, ma'am? Sorry to disturb you, but there's this guy who's been eyeing up your purse," Susan told the stranger once the dreary eyed woman could focus on her.
The mundane looked startled as she processed her words. "Oh my goodness! Thank you, he could have taken it and I wouldn't have even noticed," the woman said with a relieved laugh, not bothering to look around to see if Susan's words were true. She glanced down at her watch and her eyes widened. "I'm going to be late, shoot. Thank you so much," she said again, jumping to her feet to gather her things. Susan even went so far as to help her fold the blanket she had been laying on, not paying an ounce of attention to the Shadowhunter or the demon she had willingly exposed herself to.
((How are you feeling? And sorry if this is kind of a lot, I don't know where this all came from ^_^))
((That's good to hear!))Straightening up, Susan's smile faded the moment the woman was out of sight. Her nostrils flared and her nose wrinkled as she was met by the stench of demon blood and that could only mean the Shadowhunter had dispatched the unwelcome creature. The thought of the Nephilim having no one else to prey on, the need to save her own hide kicked in once again.
Not taking the time to scan her surroundings for the best route of escape, Susan casually started walking off in the opposite direction, not daring to look back this time. Hopefully any thought of her had left the boy's mind and it would be no trouble getting out of here.
Despite being directly under the sun, Susan knew hiding in plain sight was usually the best option. After all, her family had walked right past multiple Institutes all over Europe with relative ease. If no one was thinking of looking for you, they usually wouldn't find you.
The moment she felt the blade come around her neck, she knew she had only a few moments to figure this out. A sense of deja vu settled over her and Susan didn't dare breathe in, the blade already pressed tightly against her skin. She knew she could easily turn the deja vu into a repeat of history, but she didn't dare, not when she was surrounded by Mundanes. Lie, a voice whispered in the back of her mind. It was the safest way out of this. The Shadowhunter couldn't possibly know that much. Maybe that she had the Sight, but she could easily play dumb, shake his confidence hopefully.
"I swear to god, I don't have any money on me. Please let me go," she said in a rush, letting a hint of the desperation she was feeling seep into her voice.
Susan quickly stepped away the moment he had released her, but she didn't run, knowing full well he would just chase after her. She was fast, but she didn't have runes for speed, which she was sure were scrawled somewhere on his body. Looking up, she noticed the group and had to admit that she was surprised he could think so well on his feet. People could get pretty into cosplay, but even if she hadn't known what he was, there was no way that seraph blade could pass as part of a costume. "Well, that's embarassing," Susan said with a sheepish smile, scratching the back of her head carefully.
She returned her eyes to the Shadowhunter before her. His smile changed his face and he almost looked like someone who had never worn a scowl in his life. Unfortunately, it did nothing to sooth her. A smiling Shadowhunter was never a good sign. Hoping to distract him from any thoughts of taking that blade back out, she commented, "Those tattoos are a nice touch. Almost look real." As she spoke, she propped her hands up on her hips, bringing her fingers a little closer the her hidden blade.
As he spoke, she hardly listened to his words. Instead, she was trying to calculate the odds of him taking his seraph blade back out. If he thought she was just some girl with the Sight, he would be getting in some trouble with the Clave. If he thought she was some Downworlder, he would be breaking the Accords. If he thought she was a demon, he would have killed her already. If he knew she was a Stormway, well, that could lead to a whole lot of ugliness on her part.So basically, there was less than a 33% chance of him trying to stab her, right? She didn't like the possibility of being stabbed higher than 0%, so she should probably be turning tail.
"Is that right?" she said, as if she were even half entertained by his lies. "Well, now that you've thoroughly disillusioned me, I might as well leave you to scare someone else with that knife of yours," she told him, taking a nonchalant step back and away from him, making sure she was facing him so he wouldn't see the grip she had on the dagger behind her back.
Susan remained perfectly still as her name rolled off his tongue, her gaze locked on his. If it weren't for the faintest of breezes sending a few strands of hair against her chin, it would have appeared as if time had frozen. Behind her innocent blue eyes was a whirlwind of thoughts. Panic overshadowed all of them and she struggled to rein it back. What had made him draw such an accurate conclusion, she had no idea, but she focused on the rest of his words. He was clearly uncertain of it, unless he was setting her up, making her think she could walk away just so he could stab her in the back. With his hand resting on his weapon, it was definitely a possibility. But there was just as much a chance that his uncertainty would lead to her escape.
And boy did she need to escape. If there was the slightest chance that this boy would bring news of her family back to the Clave, they needed to get out of the city and fast. If she didn't get away and warn them, they were practically sitting ducks.
Making sure her emotions were in check one last time, she carefully removed her blade from her belt and pressed it flat against her forearm, the weapon thin enough to not be noticeable if she kept her arm at her side. If she was going to walk away from him, it wasn't going to be without a dagger in hand.
"Thanks," she replied with a small smile, each of her movements calculated as she moved to turn away.
It was fight or flight, and she was not impaling anyone today. The Clave already knew she was here, so getting rid of one of them wasn't going to do much good. With only one thought running through her mind, Susan turned completely away from him and broke into a full out sprint. She had no idea where Leo was and for a brief moment she wished it was true about twins being able to communicate telepathically. Her only plan was to get as far away from here as possible. She was more than certain that the Shadowhunter would chase her down, not wanting her to escape, but even if she did manage to out run him, there was a possibility of leading him straight home.
Coming across a path, she leaped over a park bench as if it were a hurdle, in one fluid motion, and she darted into the trees, away from the crowds of mundanes. She needed a clear path if she was going to get away.
Susan ran until she could no longer hear cars or voices, or any sign of human life. So deep within the trees, she was more likely to come across a Faerie than a Shadowhunter here. And luckily the Fae didn't abandon their own kind. Slowing to a fast walk, Susan forced herself to take deep breaths as she pulled out her own phone and hit speed dial 1.She heald the phone to her ear, but it kept ringing and ringing until she came across her mother's voicemail. You've reached Sienna Hood's cell. I can't get to the phone right now, but leave your name and number after the beep... The second she heard the high pitched signal, Susan kept her message short and sweet. "We need to leave. Meet at JFK when you get this, I'll take care of the house."
Ending the call, she attempted to text her brother, but the message wouldn't send. She had stepped out of service range frowning, she held the device off to the sides, trying to get a signal.
The voice off to her side made her jump and she fought back the instinct to hurl her knife at his throat. That would just leave her weaponless, something she couldn't afford when there were Shadowhunters after her. Turning her icy blue gaze upon him, she demanded, "What do you want from me?" While her father had been slaughtered without mercy, that was by a different generation of Nephilim. The problem with having distanced themselves so much from the Clave was that her family had only one idea of what to expect when encountering a Shadowhunter like this. It was either kill or be killed, and Susan knew that all too well.
She got the feeling that if this boy had wanted to kill her, he would have tried to do so already, aside from the brief moments that he had held a blade to her throat. He was probably regretting putting his knife away before slitting her throat, now.
Shock ran through her before it was replaced with rage. Susan's eyes narrowed as she tightened her grip on her dagger. "You son of a bitch," she said in menacingly low tone. If he didn't kill her, her mother certainly would when she found out this was just some kind of false alarm. Susan was the head of the family if anything happened to her mother. She couldn't afford to make mistakes like this. Besides, she hated moving more than anyone.
But what had she expected? Shadowhunters were manipulative, they couldn't be trusted... which only led her to think how unlikely it would be that this boy would keep his mouth shut.
Susan, bristled, snapped back, "Is that some sort of threat?" It couldn't possibly have been a warning, so a threat was the only thing it could have been. What good would it do for this boy to help her? If the Clave found out that he had let her and her family go, he would face some serious consequences. He might be accused of conspiring with the enemy. Hell, he might have to go on the run too. Not that she cared.
But what had he meant that the Clave knew they were here? They had been hear for nearly three years now and not once had they seen any sign that they had been detected by the Nephilim. If they knew where they were, they could have just performed a raid on their home, killed them while they were vulnerable, like they had her father. The idea that the two men who had killed her father could have been working alone had crossed her mind, but that didn't matter. The Clave had no love for her family. That much was clear when they had been driven out of Idris in the middle of the night so many years ago.
Susan watched him move away from his weapons with furrowed eyebrows. Either he didn't listen to Shadowhunter gossip or he was just plain stupid. She looked between the boy and the cluster of knives on the ground, assuring herself that he wasn't going to make any move towards them. Taking a step forward, she gathered the stele and seraph blades and tossed them far into the gnarled underbrush, out of sight. Fixing the Nephilim with a hard gaze, she saw the look in his eyes as he watched her and Susan realized they probably had the same thoughts running through their heads. Fight or flight. Neither was optimal for her. If she ran, he could go squealing to the Clave, even though they probably already knew where she was. If she killed him... she would just be reasserting the Clave's beliefs.
Last time had been different. Last time, the men had had weapons, had been dead set on killing her. But now he had voluntarily given up his weapons, showing no signs of aggression.
But she couldn't just leave him here. For as long as she could remember, no Shadowhunter had seen a Stormway and lived to tell the tale if they had anything to say about it.
After several long minutes of nothing but silence passing between them, Susan came to a decision. "I'm going to leave and you are going to forget you saw me. Do I make myself clear?" she demanded, her fingers still wrapped firmly around her own weapon.
Of course he wouldn't be dumb enough to forget. She knew he wouldn't, but she didn't have much of a choice. She only prayed that her mother hadn't gotten her voicemail just yet.She hardly taken a handful of steps away, her back to him, but she froze midstep at his words. Susan had no idea why he was saying these things, but the last bit rung true. Closing her eyes for the briefest of moments, she allowed herself to be held to the spot for just a little longer. "And just why is that?"
After straining her ears to hear him, she wasn't at all pleased with his answer. "Of course you don't," Susan growled. Why would he tell her? She was the enemy here. She expected nothing less. She was about to turn to face him, maybe threaten him a little -- after all, she had the dagger and he didn't -- but her phone rang in her pocket. Apparently she had stepped back into a service area. Her heart clenched, knowing it could only be her mother. Ignoring the weaponless Shadowhunter, Susan brought her phone to her ear.
"Where are you?" Sienna demanded, her words sharp and staccato.
"I'm dealing with something. Can you find Leo? I'm not at the house and can't get a hold of him right now," she said, knowing her answer was less than satisfactory.
"What is going on Susan?" her mother interrogated, her tone suggesting she would take nothing but a specific response.
Steeling herself, Susan's only reply was, "I'll meet you back home in a few minutes." Without another word she ended the call, hoping her final statement would be accurate. She couldn't waste anymore time here.
Susan quickly put her phone on silent, knowing she was going to be bombarded with calls soon that she wouldn't be able to answer. She turned back to the Shadowhunter, eyes widening when she saw his weapons had come back into play. Susan adjusted her grip on her own blade, the dagger's tip not pointed down at the ground, but it could easily be aimed at the boy's heart if he gave her a reason to.
It could have been the fierce sense of protectiveness or adrenaline that clouded her mind, but she found that she was confused and more than a little suspicious of his words. "Excuse me?"
"There is no 'we' in this," she told him firmly. Like hell she was going to let him anywhere near her brother. She wasn't about to go traipsing around the city with some Shadowhunter.((it is really friggin late here, so that's all i've got for tonight. talk to you tomorrow))
Susan strained her ears, eavesdropping on the conversation. Three more Shadowhunters, at least. She didn't like those odds.Susan looked at Oliver distastefully as he spoke. The way he put it, it didn't sound like she had much of a choice. She was still in a little bit of shock that he had been able to recognize her. The idea made her more than just a little worried that the Clave knew more about her family than she thought they did. The last time she had encountered a Shadowhunter that lived afterward, well, she couldn't even remember.
Susan liked to think that she could get around without being spotted, but her confidence was a little shaky at the moment and she couldn't afford to be taking chances.
Hands clenched tightly, she made her decision. "Fine."
Susan frowned when he stopped. Wasn't time kind of the essence here? "What are you doing?" she demanded, not looking at him as her eyes scoured the surrounding area, her ears straining to hear any type of movement that might signal an attack. It had been a while since she had last been so alert.
((I went to bed at 4... Well, the simplest solution is runes. Either make a hiding spot for her or draw some on Susan. She wouldn't like it at all, but it could be used to disguise her as any other Shadowhunter or keep the others from seeing her...))
Susan watched his hand go for his stele and she stepped back, bringing her arms close to her side. "Oh hell no. You are not touching me with that thing," she said adamantly. Susan had gone 17 years without runes, she could go 17 more.
Her eyes narrowed, her expression matching his. She didn't trust him, but she had to ask, "What were you planning to put on me." He might have only administered a simple glamour rune, maybe something that she didn't even really need, but despite the fact that he claimed to be helping her, Susan had a hard time believing he would put anything benevolent on her skin.
((lol, i don't mind ^_^))Lips pressed in a thin frown, Susan steeled herself, shoving up her sleeve to exposed a pale, scared forearm, free of any sign of past runes. "Get it over with then," she grumbled. This was never something she had wanted. It was just another thing associating her with the Nephilim. If her family saw it, she would never hear the end of it.
Susan's eyebrows were furrowed as she glared at the tip of the stele, burning the pattern into her skin. The Shadowhunter seemed to have full control over the instrument, not a single flaw in the mark. She should have known he was a perfectionist.
Susan studied the rune etched into her skin, not liking the sight of it there. Pulling down her sleeve she followed the Shadowhunter, trying to trust him a little more, or at least distrust him a little less. This particular rune was foreign to her. Her parents had tutored both herself and her brother on Shadowhunter runes, but she hadn't paid too much attention, always assuming she would never get close enough to a Shadowhunter to see the runes they wore, and she was dead set on never having to use them herself.
Susan was a little shifty eyed, sticking close to the Shadowhunter, but not too close. She had to admit she felt a little safer among the mundane crowds, but just because she usually hid there didn't mean her enemies weren't hiding right beside her.Susan's phone vibrated endlessly in her pocket, and each time she checked it was her mother. She wished she would give it a rest, hoping she would find Leo's name there instead. If her mom couldn't get a hold of him, Susan didn't know what she would do.
Susan went still when the Shadowhunter turned to her. Following his gesture, her gaze landed on the other boy, who was looking in their direction. Her heartbeat fluttered in a burst of panic that usually accompanied the spotting of a Shadowhunter and is if on instinct, something clicked in her mind as the unfamiliar burning of an activated rune seared her arm. Within moments, Susan disappeared, as if she had been edited out of existence. She just hoped it wasn't too late.
Susan was able to breathe a little easier when the Shadowhunter looked away from them. The rune must have worked. She was about to walk away, but the boy in front of her turned and look at her. She could feel her heart skip a beat. He couldn't still see her, could he? The rune should have worked on him too. Susan looked right back at him, but he said nothing, just stared blankly. So maybe he didn't see her... if he ever showed any kind of expression it wouldn't be so difficult to tell.
Clenching her fist in irritation, her phone gave an audible buzz in her pocket as her mother called for possibly the 12th time. Frowning, she put her hand over it, trying to muffle the sound and hoping the concealing rune covered up sound too. She watched the boy's face carefully, hoping something would show in his expression that would give her an answer.
Why didn't she just leave? Who cared if he heard her if he couldn't see her. She could get away and find her brother. But she was too curious to flee just yet.
Susan looked right back at him, even though he couldn't see her. Taking a few steps away, she turned her back and removed her cell from her pocket. Seeing the name flashing across the screen, she immediately answered it. "Hey, what time should I be home for dinner?" Leo asked.
Her brother's voice brought such relief to her that the glamour dropped from her and Susan quickly stepped into a crowd, hoping her sudden appearance wasn't noticeable. "Where the hell are you?" she demanded, her free hand covering her other ear as she waited for his answer, standing on tip toe to see over the crowd as if she would find her brother somewhere buried in it with his friends. She prayed that wasn't the case.
"I'm out with Evan.""Where, Leo?" Susan said, getting impatient with her brother. She knew it wasn't his fault, he didn't know what was going on, but she was irritated that he wasn't answering her question directly. That usually wasn't a good thing.
"We're outside of Taki's--"
"What the hell are you doing outside of Taki's?" she demanded. A few mundanes shot a look at her as her voice rose. Leo knew they weren't supposed to go by any place that there was a strong chance of Shadowhunter presence. They didn't go by Taki's, they didn't even walk on the same street as the Institute.
"I know, we're just walking by. No one saw me," Leo assured her.
Susan wanted to tell her brother to say good bye to his friend and get home NOW, but with everything that had happened in the span of an hour, she was too paranoid to send him off on his own. Holding the phone tightly, Susan ducked her head slightly as she lowered her voice, not wanting to draw anymore attention than she needed to, and told him, "Just go to the corner and stay there, okay? I'll meet you there, but make sure you stay with Evan." She wasn't a fan of that particular mundane, but she was hoping if any Downworlder or Shadowhunter did happen to see her brother, they would think he was just a normal mundie hanging out with his friend.
"What's going on, Susan?" Leo asked, an edge to his voice that Susan didn't want to here.
"Nothing, just... stay where you are." Before he could say anything else, she ended the call and tried to take a casual look around her, not wanting to run into any more Shadowhunters when she left. Her gaze lingered on the boy from the park, but she quickly realized her mistake when she saw that he now had a friend.
((Oh dear, that can't be good. Hope you feel better!))Sticking her phone in her pocket, Susan snuck a quick glance at the boy from the park, a gentle pleading in her eyes that he would keep his friend at bay while she made herself scarce.
Carefully, she slipped out of the crowd she had been trying to hide in and headed in the general direction of Taki's, taking slow breaths in an attempt to stay relatively calm.
Susan set a determined pace down the street, not daring to look back in case she was being followed. The Shadowhunter had gotten her this far, she would just have to trust that he would distract his friend. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, but she didn't answer it. She just wanted to pick up Leo and get home so they could figure out what to do.
((Okay :) ))
((aww :/ well when you aren't busy, where do you think we should go from here? I was planning on having Susan go meet up with her brother. If the Stormways are staying in town, they need a reason to, so we've got that to think about... Unless you wanna drop the RP, then you have nothing to worry about ^_^ ))
(( alrighty then ^_^ so how are we gonna do that. Are we gonna actually RP that, or say they did it and have them meet up somewhere?))
((Yay! So they're running into each other again? I'm going to say... a few days? You choose where they meet up this time :) ))
