Debra Firestone | 124 comments The story was in one of the books published by Bantam Books by James Blish from 1967-1977. These books were simply titled "Star Trek..." with a number after them in publishing order.

The story I am referencing was based upon the television episode "Mirror, Mirror" but took it on a new twist. In the story, the actors on Earth were filming a beaming scene for an episode and ended up on the real Enterprise. It was assumed the real people were sent back to Earth on the filming set.

Two specific incidents I remember from the story was Leonard Nimoy looking into the scanner on the bridge, thinking how he had always been curious about what Spock saw and De Forest Kelly picking up the medical scanner and dropping it when it started making noise because the sound effects were added later when they filmed the series. Both Shatner and Nimoy grinned when De dropped the scanner and he gave a sheepish grin.

I know it was a short story in one of these books, but I can't remember which one (I think there were 12 total) and I can't remember the title of the story.

In the end, the actors were able to be returned to their proper time and again assumed the real members of the Enterprise were returned to theirs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Then it can't be an original story. Those 12 James Blish books (and I have all of them) were novelizations of the episodes, and nothing but. No additional stories.

I think you may be talking about a fanfic story that was published about the same time. I need to think about what its title was.

Debra Firestone | 124 comments I actually just solved this after I posted it! I was in the library and I found a book on their discard shelves detailing all the books written about the series. The story is in Star Trek: The New Voyages March 1976 and the title of the story is Visit to a Weird Planet Revisited"

Thank you for thinking of it. Admins, you can mark this solved :)
