It's definitely not The World According to Garp which contains no aliens and is about the life of an author who is the son of an extreme feminist author.

A main character is an alien who has a stand up comedy show on TV or the radio. I think the title of the book is the title of his show. His shows start out very funny and he builds up quite a following but they become gradually more bleak as he gets more and more depressed. I think there's a thing about his plants dying, as well.
Other character include a male writer (i think hes a/ the protagonist and i think he helps the alien with the writing and promotion of his show) and a female hippie type, I think at some point they go together in nature and trip on magic mushrooms or a similar substance. They probably have sex together as well.
The antagonist is a homeless girl who gets into crack and somehow ends up with weird powers and also rats are involved.
(view spoiler)[The book ends on a big confrontation between the alien comedian and the crackhead ratgirl on which the fate of earth depends, somehow. (hide spoiler)]
I was probably not old enough to read this book but I remember finding the whole thing very weird, with strange similes and long parentheses about spirituality and Buddhism and drugs and probably other things.
Thank you!
