The books I am starting the semester with are Refugee by Alan Gratz and Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly. I'm reading two because I left Refugee in my care one day and was too lazy to get up and get it, so I picked up Lilac Girls instead. :) I've been going back and forth ever since. I started reading Refugee because I took a class on transnational and multicultural literature over the summer and really enjoyed the readings. However, they were not really books that would appeal to my students (because of the protagonists being middle-aged people). I asked for suggestions in a Teacher Facebook group and Refugee was a recommendation. It deals with some of the same issues, but the protagonists are young adults. I'm almost done and I have really enjoyed it so far.
