Has anyone read, or in the process of reading this series?

Has anyone been watching the show? was it before or after reading the book or books?

What are your thoughts?

I am a little past 100 pages into the first book and am enjoying it a lot. So far the television series is following the book very closely. We will see the further along I get.

OMG FAVORITE TOPIC!

Ok, I love Game of Thrones. I am currently in reread (not sure which number) and am on Feast for Crows. This is the series that I can go on and on about, discussing theories and clues and possible endings. The writing is just so rich, detailed, and smart. The characters are incredible unique and round, and the plot is enthralling.

Deep breath.

I also watch the show and thoroughly enjoy it. Of course, as with any adaptation, there are many things that are 'missing' or 'wrong', but I think they have done an excellent job creating Westeros and Martin's characters. I think things are starting to diverge, though, and I expect next season to have quite a few surprises for book readers.

I just started but you are correct in the themes that I can see...dysfunctional family for one! I know that Martin is a major consultant and producer (which is usually a bogus title)on the show, so hopefully he keeps them on their toes!

I've read most of them and watched the show. By most, I mean the last three. Book readers may not like it, but I understood what happened in the first two books well enough after the first two seasons. I like the books a lot, but, man, there is a lot to remember. Every now and again I'll look at the Westeros wiki and find another character or event that I don't remember.

Oh, and I'll never forgive George for ending Feast for Crows on a Sam chapter. I hate Sam.

I want to add that I really think there is a pretty big pacing problem in FfC and DwD. I believe I heard that he fired his editor before these ones and it shows. These two definitely felt more like he was moving the pieces into place for the last two books though. If the dull parts of characters playing chess help George make an epic ending then I will be very happy.

I think the sheer number of characters makes the rereads so great. There is always a tidbit or connection that I missed before. Such intricacies!

You may be right about the slowing in the last two, but even halfway through FfC, I haven't thought that. Now I will be thinking of it!

Watched all the seasons first. Just started reading it a few weeks ago. Page 350 right now on first book. Obsessed with the show. The show follows very closely with the book, so far. What's better about the book, in my opinion, is that you can read what they are thinking instead of guessing like in the show. Brings everything to a whole new light.

I agree Clayton. I am up to date on the show, didn't do any reading today so I need to get with it. Love the show and the show 'The Vikings' as well.
