Read The Great Gatsby which is on the list, I've been promising myself for years that I should read it, because of its rave reviews its received from generations of critics and readers. I'm glad I read it so I can honestly now say that I cannot understand what all the fuss was about. The characters are superficial and have very little depth to them. The narrative has little substance, definitely not a page turner. For me a throw away book from an allegedly great American writer. I think I will stick to Mark Twain, Louisa M Alcott and Hemingway.

We have read this twice as a group, 2015 and 2018. Here is the comments from 2015 - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
and 2018 - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
As you can see it didn't really raise much discussion either time. I think it's a Marmite book (you either love it or hate it).
Of the American writers on the list I prefer Steinbeck.
