Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter, #6) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince question

What are your thoughts on Ginny Weasley?

Although I like her well enough I do see why a lot of people see her as a "Mary Sue." She sort of magically (ha!) became everything Harry would ever want in a girl; funny, athletic, pretty blah blah...

We just never really got to know her the way we knew Hermione or even Luna. It's always hard to see your protagonist wind up with someone you don't really feel like you totally know. :P

She was ok. I mean of course they mentioned that she liked Harry throughout the books, but she also dated others. All of a sudden Harry wanted her. I think it would have made more sense to me if throughout the books if he showed a little interest in her. It just seems like I don't really know her after reading all of the books.

I like Ginny. I wish we had learned more about her. We don't learn as much about her as we do, say, Harry, Ron, or Hermione. But we do learn enough to know that the movies did her character a great injustice. The movies portrayed her simply as Harry Potter's girlfriend. But there is more to her than that.

Ginny's crush on Harry; what little girl wouldn't be slightly enamored with the wizard who "defeated" the Dark Lord? Harry is considered a hero. And with her brother coming home with stories of his new friend and his goodness and the adventures they took together, it makes perfect sense that Ginny would greatly admire/be infatuated with him. There's nothing wrong with that. Not to mention, he saved her life in the Chamber of Secrets. As she matured, she tried to move on from her childhood crush. As for Harry's attraction to her being considered “magical” and “sudden”, what kind of attraction isn't? Of course there are times when attraction grows slowly, but sometimes it just hits you in the face. And he did try to dissuade himself from it, reminding himself that Ginny was his best friend's sister. They didn't start dating immediately; their relationship came about later on.

Also remember that Ginny and Harry shared a commonality. Harry's dealings with Horcruxes were something that Ginny could relate to on a deeply personal level. She was possessed at age twelve by a Horcrux in a diary. She knew what it was like to have Voldemort inside her head. She was affected by the Dementors as badly as Harry because of it. She also knows that Harry has a lot to deal with and so supports him. Maybe not the level of support of traveling with him on his journey (which he wouldn't have allowed anyway, not wanting to put her in danger. Even Ron and Hermione came against his best wishes), but she did let him know that she was on his side. She understood that they probably wouldn't have a normal relationship, that there was every possibility he might be killed. But she stayed strong and supported him and their entire cause. It wasn't only Neville who kept Dumbledore's Army running when Snape became headmaster. Ginny was instrumental in its revival and continuance just as much as Neville. She, along with other members of the D.A., openly defied the Death Eaters at Hogwarts and stood up for and tried to protect the students. That takes a lot of guts. Her boyfriend, brother, and friend are risking their lives looking for Horcruxes across the country, who knows where they are. Her family is on the list of undesirables as blood traitors, putting them all at risk under the Ministry's new regime. Her school is run by Death Eaters who torture the students (including her) regularly.

I don't understand the idealization accusation. Ginny wasn't idealized any more than Neville or Luna or any other character. And by the way, she was good friends with both of them. Did she make the mistake of making fun of Fleur? Maybe. Could she have handled her frustration (which she wasn't alone in feeling at the time) better? Yeah. We don't always make good decisions when we're frustrated. Human error. Did she make the mistake of writing in a strange diary? Yes, as her father so eloquently reminded her, “Haven't I taught you anything? What have I always told you? Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain?”

All in all, I like Ginny. I liked her character and was saddened that the movie took so much away from her.

Ginny's existence was hardly felt throughout the series. Fred and George had little role to play but still left an impact on the reader's mind.
There is not much that you can remember about her character...not very impressive.

I love Ginny Weasley. I think she's wonderful on her own and she is a perfect match for Harry as well.

I don't remember much of her at all. Sure, I read all the books, but she left so little impression that I can't remember any important scenes with her in it; well, besides that one scene in the Chamber of Secrets with the basilisk.

But besides that, she was just a character in the background that SOMEHOW ended up with the main character. I can't even remember how that happened.

It's probably time I read the books again.

Umm movie ginny completely ruined book ginny for me. And I was never really fond of book ginny in the first place. In the chamber of secrets , she was alright I guess. But I mean she did fall for Tom riddles trick. After order of Phoenix jk Rowling tried to make ginny really cool you know epic quidditch player , popular-everyone loves ginny. But honestly you never really get to know her. She has practically zero character development and she's just there. I agree with the fact that you can just take her out of the books after chamber of secrets and it wouldn't make much of a difference.
And yeahh Harry's thing for her was pretty sudden and random.
Agree with Ashley on her being a 'wax character'
I don't hate ginny but I don't love her. Though I understand Harry getting together with her, that way he could get what he always wanted-to be a part of a big family that loved him.

Book Ginny is 5,000,000,000 times better than movie Ginny, who (I personally think) sucks.

The reason people hate on characters like Ginny (and Ron)is because the directors have done everything to make Harry Potter fit into the "Hollywood formula", making it seem like Harmony could be a possibility. They did mold Ginny to be whatever they wanted her to be (Bonnie Wright's acting didn't help much) and made Ron seem in some ways like a laughable coward. When you read the books, though, and your mind isn't filled with stereotypical nonsense, you'll see that all of the characters- even the secondary ones- have layers, and that's partly what makes Harry Potter so amazing.
That having been said, I do have my worries about Hinny and the fact that she sort of idolizes Harry- then again, we got to see that they both have very similar nature/tempers, while complementing each other in the way the see the world (she sees him as as hero, he doesn't really have much faith in himself)- a little like Ron and Hermione in that way. It is true that we didn't get to see much of the "changed Ginny", but that article that Rowling released the other day gave me the impression that she's been good for Harry and all. Anyways, I always knew they would end up together somehow.

I found she was like a 'wax character' like just moulded into the stereotypical character Rowling needed at that time in the novel. For example in the chamber of secrets we get 'the damsel in distress.' Also throughout the novels we see her as the annoying little sister, until she's old enough to be sexualised despite her innocence. These factors make me personally think she's a dissapointing flat character, opposed to being a dynamic/interesting character like Rowling's other creations.

I felt that their relationship seemed very forced. We hardly see her in any of the books nor is Harry the least bit interested in her and then suddenly she ends up as his wife. Not even a high school romance but his " one , true soulmate". With no background info or any sort of build up I am not buying it.
Also while i liked young Ginny I didn't care for her teenage version. She had become a boring popular girl caricature.

I think she really is suited for harry because she is strong woman, a quality which harry likes in women, also the love between harry and hermione was all sisterly love.

Everybody that I like, I just realized a lot of people don't like :(

Not really a fan, but I don't dislike her. After a while, I got really sick of everyone talking up Ginny's traits like how pretty she was and how good she was at sports and stuff. I don't ship Harry with Hermione, but I think it would have been a better match than Ginny.

She was rather boring at first, then suddenly she developed a (sometimes annoying) personality. I am guessing that was so Harry would have a reason to look at her as more than his best mate's boring little sister. But I didn't find it altogether plausible, and I think the actress that played her in the movies portrayed her like an emotionless zombie. JUST MY OPINION.

I like Ginny. Partly because she is redheaded (I mean how can you NOT LOVE ginger people?), partly because she is a Weasley and simply just because I find her so shy and fragile and pretty in the books, although she really didnt do ANYTHING in the books. From harry I would expect to find someone interesting and importand, but ginny ... sh is just so bold and invisible. She does not really have got well defined (too wild) personality and I really dont think they are the best fit. Not my fave couple, I guess. Mixed feelings on that one.

i really hate ginny. she isnt like harry and i hate that they got married. harry would have been better off with hermione as both were brought up by muggles and they are more like each other. plus i think hermione is prettier.

Eliza (well, both of you, actually), you just said everything I think about Ginny. I always tell people I relate more to her than many of the characters. Like her, I'm very social and can talk to just about anybody with ease, except for the guy I'm totally crushing on, and then I clam up and act like an idiot. But I'd support and defend the person/people I love with my life, and I will readily tell the person I love when they are being an idiot. I'm overlooked by my family, despite being the eldest, and honestly, I would be all about a secret book that took me to a mysterious dream world where it's just me and this sexy (I base this on Christian Coulson) dude who showers me with attention. I mean, come on. :p

Ginny is an interesting person and after her first year has horrors in her past which make her really relaterable to Harry.

Ha! You read my mind. I was just recently thinking how much I can't stand her. I just finished a whole blog post on that! She is such a Mary Sue and her relationship with Harry is really shallow. She's not even important, the whole books would hav been no different if Ginny had not existed except for the chamber of secrets. Afyer that she was just useless. They had absolutely no chemistry either.

I don't like her, mainly because of how bad they portrayed Ginny in the movies, although she is kind of... agreeable in the books.

And I don't get their love story at all, because out of a sudden, Harry realizes he likes her? I mean, why? What happened? He always treated her like a sister, since most of the summers he lived at The Burrow, and he never paid any attention to her at all, although she was always fangirling about him.

I've always thought Harry and Hermione are the thing, again, not because it was natural for "the hero" to get "the girl", but because they completed each other in ways Ginny and Ron couldn't have understood neither of them. He was brave, and she was clever, but they never thought one was better. Harry always admired her cleverness, and told her so every time, and Hermione thought "there are more important things" than books and cleverness.

Ginny didn't stand to me as a strong character, maybe once in a while, but she's always been overshadowed by Fred and George's awesomeness, and by Hermione.

I really like her she totally suits harry.

I think that harry ending up with Ginny is kind of Incest because the weasleys treated him like family and by extention he probably consider her a sister and that just aint right. Plus Harmony 4 ever.
