SOLVED. Science fiction with space/time travel-future sending messages to past to prevent pollution bloom. [s]

I would have read this in middle or high school so around the 1970s-early 1980s. The main theme of the plot was future Earth was being devastated by a pollution bloom that they could not stop. They figured out the initial cause and attempted to send messages to that effect into space as an attempt to communicate with the past. As they did this, the bloom worsened until they realized the messages were being misconstrued as some kind of miracle formula and it was causing the bloom in the first place. Paradox! I don't remember how they solved it. I'd love to figure out this book and suggest it to my kids.
