ABANDONED. Fantasy book about a ring. (NOT the Lord of The Rings)

The story is about a princess. Her father was in the middle of treaty and they were having a ball, the minstrel who played had a twisted, scarred face. There was an attack that night in which the princess's father and brother were killed. She escaped on her father's warhorse and later met up with the minstrel. In an effort to save her life and take her somewhere safe, he cuts her long hair and dresses her up like a boy. They set out on a journey to her mother's homeland.
The villain owns and trains griffins. The focal point of the book is the villain's evil ring which the princess picked up "by chance" in the stables when she was fleeing.
I thought the book was called "The Ring" but google searches have proved fruitless; too many books called The ring.
