Jon Pheloung | 5 comments Published 2016/17. Writer is middle-aged white American male who attended Iowa Workshop or similar place. This is his debut novel. It opens with a shooting in open country (near a riverbed) and burying the body by an ageing professional killer and his accomplice who later cannot keep himself from spending his fee in a spectacular way (drugs, strippers). This angers the old killer who is looking to see out his last days in peace. A recently divorced/separated sheriff is tasked with bringing the old killer to justice.

Jon Pheloung | 5 comments also: the office of the sheriff is small and there's bad blood between the sheriff and the (main character) deputy. The elderly killer reminisces at times about his wife - SPOILER - turns out she's buried in the yard and he might have killed her

Jon Pheloung | 5 comments Vivid opening scene: elderly killer and his young sidekick execute another man, shot in head out by a desolate dry river bed.
The sidekick is raw and untested and irritating to the old man who is a consummate professional when it comes to contract killing.
After they get paid, the sidekick makes too much fuss in nearby town, spending his fee on drugs and strippers.
