Katie K's dive into All Things Fantasy ~ aka series challenge

Mmmm Skyward by Brandon Sanderson was one of my favourites of 2019, and Moxie was excellent!
Also just finished The Winter of the Witch and that was amazing!

That's excellent! I really have to read more of Sanderson's work. And you guys have got me interested in Moxie from the YA thread :D What's the Winter of the Witch?
Katie wrote: "I completely understand wanting to take a break from heavy fantasy for a while. I'm enjoying Fool's Fate a lot, but not as much as the last ones. Maybe it's because I'm trying to rush a bit to catc..."
the last Bear & the Nightingale book... I thought you guys were planning to continue, from discussion in the thread?... I got distracted by other series I was working on, and never noticed a thread happen...

Yeah I couldn’t remember if we were gonna continue the book so I just sent a post in that forum. Hopefully we can get something requested. Did you want to join in too??

I'm so happy to see you're enjoying the Realm of the Elderlings saga by Robin Hobb. This series got me hooked to Fantasy as a kid/teen, and I discover new themes every time I re-read it :)
And good for you about not caring whether your series list grows too much. Let's all just read the books we want! :D
I have to say, I always enjoy reading your monthly wrap-ups here. I may not comment, but I'm silently stalking this thread :p

I'm really enamored with the Realm of the Elderlings. I don't want it to end XD That's so amazing you found it when you were younger! I hadn't even heard of it until recently!
lol, for sure! Let the reading commence!

Fool's Fate was a little bittersweet for me because yet another trilogy had come to an end. It's hard letting go of characters you love so much. The only good news here is that there is yet another trilogy I can invest in before it is entirely over XD
City of Ghosts I discovered from a booktuber because I'm so enamoured by Scotland and it's history. While I always regret spooky tales (and the bumps that come later in the night), I am always captivated by them. And this one wasn't all that spooky. I think this series has been categorized as a middle reader/YA. That being said I still enjoyed the lightness to the tale of a girl and her ghost friend. Schwab really knows how to write interesting characters. And the audiobook I listened to made it even more fun and captivating (and a well deserved break from all of the high fantasy I've been reading). I'm very excited to read more~
I was a little iffy when starting Sword of Destiny because I wasn't so fond of "Blood of Elves". But once I started reading these little shorts I fell in love with the characters within the pages <3 They're so well developed and so unique. The real world problems in this fantasy realm are just superb. And I realized something else. I'm kinda glad I didn't start the Witcher series with the books. I've played a bit of the video games and then watched the Netflix show. And because of all of this I feel I have a better understanding of characters and events when reading the novels. Maybe it's more of a visual memory thing for me? But remember characters names and events in books is hard! Especially high fantasy. I remember having that issue with GOT too. But yeah, I'm so glad I decided to give the Witcher series another chance. I'm gonna start "The Last Wish" soon and can't wait to see what monsters and characters we meet <3

I read Fool's Fate back when it was the last published book in the Realm in the Elderlings. I remember checking every single interview of Robin Hobb to learn whether there was going to more books in the universe or not :p
You've read the Witcher books in a weird order :p I started with The Last Wish (set-up the world), then Sword of Destiny (introduces Ciri) so that by the time I got to Blood of Elves, I really cared about the characters.
Regarding visual memory... I can remember names from books pretty easily, but take away the text and I'm struggling. It's one of the reason I can't do complex high fantasy in audiobooks. If I'm watching a TV show and want to remember events from season to season (without re-watching), I have to turn on the subtiles. I'm weird that way xD
I'm one of those people that can't 'imagine' or 'see' a scene from a book in my mind. I get vague impressions and blurry spots at best. I wonder if there's a link...

Oh wow! Early on when she was still writing, huh? Aren't you glad she decided to continue writing? lol. All of your research wasn't in vein :D
Yeahhhh....I kinda have ^^; Sometimes prequels aren't needed to start a series, right? So I decided to start with "Blood of Elves" last year. Little did I know most of the character introductions were in those prequels. lol. As for my reading now (with "Sword of Destiny" and "The Last Wish" I blame Amazon. lol Got them delivered out of order xp) I totally agree with you in that the build up helps you prepare for Blood of elves :D
Right! Like you remember the look of a name on the page and how that character is in the world...but take away the book and you're like "it started with a C...". lol Yeah you never know about that. Every takes in information in different ways. There's gotta be a link :D

The Witcher lore is absolutely fantastic! And hearing those little tales in each section just immediately caught my interest. Sadly I wasn't too fond of Blood of Elves though.
The Girl in the Tower was a bit of a surprise for me. I struggled a lot with the first book, only really becoming invested at the end there. But with my favorite character finally taking the lead in this book only good things were to come~

Not too many favorites for me this month. And I expect my BR will be kinda low too because I don't have library access anymore. And I'm not really much of an ebook person. There's just something about holding the book in your hand and turning the pages, you know? That being said I've still tried to find ways to continue reading during this crisis. Fingers crossed and I hope everyone stays safe and healthy during these trying times~
Back to the reading. I've gotta say that The Dragon Keeper is once again my favorite pick. And I'm saying that because it is another Robin Hobb book. Yes yes, I know I absolutely adore her writing. lol. And in this installment we get new characters in the Rain Wilds! How exciting! And just getting to see how dragons are in her world of the elderlings. Gosh. I just really appreciate how she writes her characters. So flawed and complex, I love 'em. Hobb really needs to write more female villains though, lol. I always hate men in her books XD Please, anyone who is reading this, check out the Realm of the Elderling series if you haven't yet. It does not disappoint <3
Until next time~

I tried a few new comics in the month of August. While I think the new styles are interesting I have to say I like the Netflix renditions of Locke & Key and The Umbrella Academy better. But then again I haven't enjoyed reading a lot of 'dark' content recently. Outlander is becoming meh for me too. I like the show changes better than the books. Actually most of these on my list I have seen the shows of ~ Avatar, Locke & Key, The Umbrella Academy, Assassination Classroom, Outlander...
My favorite this month would be Tower of Dawn and the Assassination Classroom manga. Tower of dawn was such a change of perspective for the series. And I really really like how we see a main character cope with such a physical disability. While I don't necessarily like the conclusion and easy fantasy fix to the problem, I still enjoyed the lessons learned within the book. Moreover, it introduced one of my new favorite female leads of the series ^~^ As for the manga, what can I say...the koro sensei is best teacher <3

Plus, of course, extra points for all the Robin Hobb praise :D

Omg yes! My September reads will be wonderful! Hobbs is my absolute favorite author right now <3

Slow month kinda...but boy oh boy did I enjoy it. I had a good ole re-read with A Court of Wings and Ruin and I got to learn more of my boy Fitz in Fool's Assassin. I cannot rave enough about these books. My heart belongs to these worlds and their characters, truly. Excuse me while I go away to disappear in them once more with Fool's Quest

Time to catch up on my reading notes for the past few months ^^;
I guess I can tell you November was kinda meh. These were some good books. But not entirely great for me. Comics were okay. As for the novels. I'd say I liked Fool's Quest best. But it still had that middle book syndrome. Lots of build up to the .... the.... conclusion. Ahhh! Maybe I just don't want the world of the Elderlings to end >_< lol. But really. Some of the book slowed down at part. At the same time I just enjoy the world and its people so much that I carried on. And am hyped....or more like dreading the final book Hobb has written ^^;
As for Throne of Glass, I did it! Finished this immense series of Sarah's. While I love her writing style for some reason I could not connect with the characters in Throne of Glass as much as I could in A Court of Thorns and Roses. The scale she had for the final book was immense. So many characters and stories coming together in one final battle. And I applaud her for that. And some of those fight or even the scenes in which characters went through ghastly events will still stick in my mind. So I guess I liked this series, but didn't love it if that makes sense. My favorite character is actually a new one from the later book Tower of Dawn.If only Yrene could have been in more of the series. lol. Well I guess she was...but you know...
So that kinda concludes my thoughts for the month. Kinda unpopular thoughts with well loved books. But it is what it is XD

Nuthin'. Nada. lol
Well that's not true. I have continued on in some books...but I've been putting them off. So here's hoping December is better ^^

New books in the new year. I'm excited!!! :D

Here are some of my favorites of the year~

So this month was kinda a bummer. My only 5 star read was more of a standalone so it doesn't apply here. The Sword of Kaigen for all you out there, I highly recommend.
That book was a great followup after the end of the Realm of the Elderling series. Just what I needed. Malice and Children of Virtue and Vengeance...not so much.
Besides that I'm reading a lot of comics on comixology recently. I didn't list here because I don't know how far I'll get. But Here's what I'm reading~ Some Scarlet Witch stuff (because WandaVision!), Steven Universe, Chihayafuru, Your Lie in April, Alita Battle Angel, and Fairytail. Some I've already decided to stop. Getting enough of a snippet. But I'm continuing with Chihayafuru and Your Lie in April. Though I know how they end because anime ~<3

Light reading month this time around. Got to visit my boy in Canada after wayyyy too long of a wait. Pandemics really suck when you're in a LDR. ugh. Anywaysssss.
Vacations left me in a reading funk. So I was only able to get to two books this month. The final audiobook of Binti and then the novel Jade City.
The Binti series had its ebbs and flows for sure. I liked how they finished the series, but at the same time it was a bit lack luster for me. The narrator was fantastic though. Highly reccomend a listen. They're nice and short compared to other High Fantasy.
Now onto Jade City. I was super de duper excited for this one. Right after finishing the Sword of Kaigen I was ready for another asian inspired fantasy world filled with strive and struggle! To start things off this book was written by yet another badass female author. Love <3 Now when we get to the knit and gritty of the story.... I would say Jade City is very much a fantasy gang war book. Much like the Yakuza or something... I think at least. I absolutely loved the magical element of Jade in these books. How they create so much power, but are very dangerous and addictive to some. Very nice idea. I like powers with flaws.
The story was so so for me. In some regards I don't gravitate towards mafia/gang related stories. They don't interest me. Though this setting and its characters truly captivated me. The inner struggles of the main family, the worry of war, of what one needs to do for ones family. Those are the parts I truly loved. I'm a character person afterall. Give me that any day over some epic war scene XP

((May need to look up this show Yakuza Princess now after finding a good gif for Jade City, lol))
So yeah, That's my corner for the week. See you all next time!

Here are some of my favorites of the year~

Sooooo. Back to reading!!! I've been recommended some good series by peeps! Psyren, Vol. 1: Urban Legend was recommended to me by my boyfriend David while I was looking for a good manga to read. It's kinda slow goings so far. But I love the mystery aspect so far. Like what kind of game is this really? And how is time travel involved? O.o
The Dresdon Files is a series that I am also back into reading. I was so so so intrigued by the first book. Just diving into something with a nice urban fantasy vibes really mixed things up from my usual reads. And the character was fun and quirky to boot! Several books into the series now and I am truly noticing some flaws. I've said this before in my buddy reads...but boy oh boy does Jim Butcher not know how to write woman ^^; It's sad really. And very very....not something I'm into. You'd think he's have a bunch of strong ladies, right? With Murphy and the like? But even she gets written poorly on occasion. And Dresdon gets horny for every single woman he lays eyes on. Talking about chest size and ear lobes. Ugh. Honestly this part of the series is a serious turn off for me. I don't know if Butcher did it as a joke or like a gimmick or like his own sexual frustrations or like fan pandering? But can't we have some decently written male characters for once? Who don't wanna f*ck every mytical lady out there? Ugh.
Rant aside. If all of those god awful scenes are removed it's a pretty decent series. The side characters are often more likeable than Dresdon. Michael oh goodest of boys, please come back. The lore is a mix from all different cultures. So it's fun to see what kind of mythical mystery will turn up next. The writing is very fast paced too, which is nice! I am going to continue this series. But know that I will always have a strong view against how woman are portrayed here. Because seriously. Rein it in Butcher XP

Well...I kinda fell off of the map at the end of the fall. So I'll need to fix my sheets eventualy. lol. But I just kind of fell into a slump. I've got to mix up my genres or something to avoid the slog I think. Hobb does have those huge tome's of hers. And though I love them, it's nice to finish something short and sweet too. lol. Here's hoping the next year I can get back into things~

Reading has been slow for me for a while. Oh boy. Did things pick up for me fast! I went from being unemployed to having like x4 jobs?? ^^; With working full time and part time during my weeks I've been struggling oh so much to keep up with my reading. But I won't give up!
I've taken to reading more audiobook during my work commute now! And even if I'm worn out to read a light manga before bed! I shall not give up my fun hobbies and buddy reads!!
I don't know if anyone still follows me on this forum. But if you know of any great audiobooks send the recommendations my way! :D
I'm still shocked we got through so much of Hobb's works this year! Before we know it we'll have none left. That will be so sad :'( Speaking of Hobb, do we have the next series planned after "Fool's Fate"? Strange the Dreamer was such a good tale <3 What were some of your other favorites?
