But that same time difference can be used for beater. No?
You can see how long player was down and add it to beater reading time?

Not making sense out of your head? Try having this discussion on foreign language :P

Slytherin Beater

Tea is back on her broom to defend Kathleen against Cat's attack.

Reading: My Lady Jane (same book)

I don't think it's fair that second beater can continue reading when chaser can't. Even if there is waiting time before next attack.

I wouldn’t pause the defense beaters either though.
The chaser pauses because that’s the reward of a successful attack, but everyone else keeps going on their moves.
Penalising Beaters for unsportsmanlike behaviour (i.e hitting a paused chaser) is the pain the attackers get for prolonging that chaser pause. Defending beaters continue to deflect &adminster first aid to the paused chaser without interference.

I think it makes sense and allows reasonable flow to the game, with options on each side to make plays that suit their team strengths/ weaknesses?

Karishma (karishmanewar) Edit : on second thoughts still a bit confused about the two beater cumulative time waiting.

So if a chaser is being attacked by 2 beaters:

Knocked off by beater 1a
Beater 2a can carry on to keep them off.

Defenders have the choice of either 2 defenders on 1 chaser or beater 1d reading to save them twice in a row.

If both beater attacks land at the same time, the pause for the chaser isn't cumulative if the defense happens from both beater d. Otherwise it is...

Am I anywhere near understanding this?

I'm trying to think through possible penalty options for attacking a downed chaser that don't end up in a stalemate as suggested by Cat in an earlier post. Brain is spinning and not coming to a conclusion at the moment.

I suspect my preferred option would be to simplify it to the scenario above with no penalties to keep all the beaters flying as freely as possible. Don't know why I'm prioritising beaters, but it feels tricky to stop scores with the rules as they are unless the quaffle is broken

message 609: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10159 comments Mod
So, in the Kathleen scenario (sorry Kathleen, in offensively reading quietly!), using my time penalty suggestion

Kathleen starts reading
Cat attacks her current book
Tea starts defending
Karishma attacks her previous chain book
Karishma finishes previous chain book
Kathleen pauses reading
Cat carries on reading
Tea carries on reading
Louise is urgently summons, starts defending
Cat finishes her book

She can now either kick Kathleen whilst she's down, time penalty starts for Cat, or wait for Louise to rescue her & then knock her off.

Kathleen can't read again until both rescues have been made, but you wouldn't add extra delay on.

So, Cat kicks whilst Kathleen is down, Kathleen needs two rescues
Tea & Louise rescue
Kathleen finishes
Goal
Cat is on the bench for being mean

Or, Cat takes a gamble, doesn't announce her completion, hoping that Louise will beat Tea to the finish
Louise finishes, rescues Kathleen
Kathleen starts reading
Cat announces completion
Kathleen pauses reading
Tea rescues
Kathleen finishes
Goal.

The gamble point does delay Cat & Kathleen, but evenly (and Cat's gamble might fail, if Tea finishes first)
The kick when your down doesn't have much benefit, but guarantees pain to the attacker. The defense aren't adversely affected.

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9630 comments You do know that the easiest solution would be that we agree not attacking same player, right?

we are running in circles, and as it seems we'd never agree.

My frustration with the game has been that it seems very skewed in favour of the chasers scoring and there's not much the attacking team can do to slow that down (personal opinion!). Therefore to me, it seems that both attacking beaters hitting one player at the same time isn't a problem. There shouldn't be penalties involved and the defending beaters should defend both attacks.

It feels like it's v late in the tournament to be sorting this all out either way.

This might be hugely oversimplifying the problems.

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9630 comments Sophie wrote: "My frustration with the game has been that it seems very skewed in favour of the chasers scoring and there's not much the attacking team can do to slow that down (personal opinion!)."

In my opinion in original rules (first round) chasers didn't have advantage. When those times popped up, yes they might have advantage.
But at the same time it goes for both team not only one. Our chasers have advantage over your beaters and your chasers over our beaters. So it's not like only one side is profiting from it.

That still doesn't mean beater should get to do something chaser isn't.

At the same time beater has advantage during the game because chaser has to stop reading when knocked off, giving beater more time to do something else. Not to mention they can read any book in quaffle, not just current chain. That also gives them slight advantage in my opinion (as you might have noticed today and as we did with Ravens in last match)

Shannon (countessmom) | 4087 comments Isn’t it stated in the rules somewhere that you can only attack one chaser one at a time and not concurrently? Or did I imagine that? Personally I don’t think you can.

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9630 comments Shannon wrote: "Isn’t it stated in the rules somewhere that you can only attack one chaser one at a time and not concurrently? Or did I imagine that? Personally I don’t think you can."

Honestly, I don't know. We have rules and overruling written all over the place.
I assumed same thing, but I'm really not sure. That's why we are having this discussion in the first place

message 617: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (countessmom) | 4087 comments Well for what’s it worth I say no. Eventually one of the 2 Beaters would finish knocking the Chaser off their broom. By the time the second Beater finishes the Chaser is already knocked off, which you can’t do....you can’t knock someone from their broom who’s already knocked off. So, fo me, that brings me to the conclusion you can’t.

Serpintly are!

Today's been shattering! We are clock watching for Super Seeker Sophie the Sprout to soar from the sun onto the snitch!

And Sarah, bless her, has been pulling a long solo shift at the hoops..
What did you use to make that quaffle?! I'm starting to worry that you booby trapped it to take her out! ;-P

message 644: by Eldarwen (new)

We're definitely also watching the clock for the snitch release. Today has indeed been shattering, but it's been a long match, to be honest. Juggling work, other obligations and this is .... taxing, to say the least!

It's been fun though - and I expect a few more cheese jokes before this is over, k? ;-)

As for the booby traps, those are only found in the Maze, not in the Quaffle hehe. Maybe Sarah took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in the Maze instead?

Yeah, I like Quidditch a lot, and I'd be up for playing it again in the future. But maybe as a weekend intensive, rather than the longer version.

Snitches released on completion of the first quaffle / after 24hrs and can be read for immediately on being found (and suck up that Quidditch is really harsh on timezone anomalies

message 647: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13735 comments Mod
I agree on the weekend intensive. It's easier for people to keep a few hours at a time free to just read and focus on a challenge on the weekend than during the work week. With the exception of course of those who work weekends and/or shifts but it's still easier to do this on a weekend for the most part.

Different snitch release... yeah maybe. It's definitely something to think about. It could be harder to find so it would take longer with the puzzles etc, or draw out the puzzle part so speedy seekers don't catch the snitch before the others have even built a quaffle...

Lots of possibilities really!

message 648: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13735 comments Mod
But hey, the snakes have a proposition for the badgers.

How about a ceasefire?

Potentially as of right now? Your Quaffle is broken so you wouldn't have to work on rebuilding. We would agree not to make any more chains.

Or if you don't want to do it right away, how about making it count once the snitch is released and then just let the seekers do their thing while the rest of the teams take a well-deserved breather?

Oh, and in addition to the above, I forgot to mention finishing off outstanding books/defences, of course.

Basically, Sarah wouldn't read her chunkster for nothing but would still get points for finishing it and our chasers would not be left unconscious.
