I'd say it's use the top 5 (English) editions on Goodreads OR use the foreign language copy you hold in your hands... don't bother looking for a better foreign edition... that was basically the ruling last year, right?... Whatever appeared on the #1 book page, or the page count in the foreign copy you own...
Just realized there's a 4th page to this thread... stupid browser bugs... hope I didn't make a contradictory mess of an official mod ruling...

That happens to me all the time!
The default is the 5 most popular versions if you click on other editions. To keep it simple I think that's the way to go.

Also what is the earliest you can start for the points to count?

whatever we did last year... I think it was 2 weeks after. I'd say no more than one week before.

*facepalm*
I should just read them. LOL

This is correct. :)
This is correct. :)

Lol good idea Diana. I'm also finishing up my paused books.

If I decide to read them in 2019 starting from the beginning those will count right?

Yes, as long as you read the whole book in 2019 it counts, so if you start from the beginning it counts. It's like a reread and those count.

I'm also planning on reading lots of my graphic novels now too, since they aren't big on points.

I ended up in the same state last year and I helped create the rules. January was by far my worst month.

Come join Elinor and me in the new comic book club. Get that extra .1 point for BRs. 😁

Unfortunately no. Reading date should start Jan 1st.

Correct, nothing in progress counts.

Are there pictures and or graphics? If so it's GN.

See if you can get the page count off of Amazon and if not I would say 30 pages per hour is about right.

Thanks, Scott - I'm looking at audiobook tie-ins with sci-fi TV shows (Dr Who, Sapphire & Steel, etc) that have no physical book, so it's going to have to be estimated page count.
30pgs per hour is about right... some are faster... some are slower... but the majority fall around there... that's 10hrs for a 300 page book...

I'm talking about

and this is the bindup:

I'd say I choose the second longest that is not a bindup.

I think it's the top 5 english editions... that's the way I've been treating it, anyway... floating into foreign languages tends to lead to free points, because certain languages require longer words to get the point across...
That being said, I think it's still standing policy to allow the use of whichever book you're reading, if you live in a foreign country and are reading a foreign language book... longer words take longer to read... it's a double edged sword...

Can we have some clarification on the 'using the edition of the book you're reading' comment Iain's just made please?
I've just finished a book with a page count of 1,071, but my copy is 6th in the GR list - the longest version in the top 5 is 907 pages, so that's the total I've entered in my book page total count. It's an English language version, so I have to take the loss of page count, yes? Which is fair enough; I've been adding pages, so this just balances things out, I'd just appreciate the clarification!

I'm not an official on this, that was just the ruling they made last year for people reading German editions of Way of Kings, and the like... probably best to wait for a mod to clarify if that rule was dropped this year or not...

@Shaitarn - Only use the edition from after the top five if you are reading in another language. :)

Not sure...? I've never come across this issue yet so I'm going to wait fo Scott or Niki to respond to this. They worked out the rules for page numbers. :)

Bump :)
I'd like to ask this question again because I have the exact same issue right now, so it would be great if we could clarify this once and for all.
