Mine too. They are the most friendly people. Not to brag but I think people in Manchester are more friendlier than other places in England. There is no hate crime and if there was we sort it out immediately.

Derek LegoLand is very fun, and quite impressive. Just a bit crowded (recommend going during the week).

Mystic Orange (Rumell) (rkrespectedmember) I don't think I'd go. I'm not into theme parks.

Mystic Orange (Rumell) (rkrespectedmember) I used to go to Alton Towers and Camelot but that's it.

Derek Spent time over the weekend around Sacramento and the various areas surrounding that city.

Can't recommend going there at all, to anyone. Avoid if possible.

message 61: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (puffyliquid) @Derek, If you don't mind my asking, what was so bad about it?

message 62: by Derek (new)

Derek The heat for one. The drug infestation is another. Everything is so spread out, it takes you an hour to get anywhere. Then you have so many people leaving the Bay Area due to housing prices soaring beyond all reality jumping up North and the folks that have been there for a good time aren't happy about it the influx of more people, cars, traffic, etc. Same thing happened in Oakland, Portland, and even Fremont.

message 63: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (puffyliquid) Wow, that does sound bad. I lived in a city that was over populated once and it wasn't the most pleasant.

I have been to Disney World in Florida a few times, planning another trip there for the new year. I have also been to Santa Fe, Cleveland to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that was back in 1997! I've also spent a week in Colorado Springs, I'm not sure if that really counts as traveling, but it got me out of the city and the mountains are lovely.

message 65: by Derek (new)

Derek It is really pretty out there in the Colorado mountains. My wife and I did some snow shoe hiking around Rocky Mountain National Park for our anniversary one year (and got snowed on), but it was such a memorable and visually-stunning outing.

Thomas (tom471) | 27 comments One of our stops was Castle Howard, still belongs to the Howard family. Katherine Howard was one of Henry VIII's wives. Another stop was Portmeiron, where "The Prisoner" was filmed. We also rode a train through Snowdonia National Park.

Thomas (tom471) | 27 comments My wife and I have returned from a UK land tour, England, Wales, and Scotland. One of our stops was Castle Howard, still belongs to the Howard family. Katherine Howard was one of Henry VIII's wives. Another stop was Portmeiron, where "The Prisoner" was filmed. We also rode a train through Snowdonia National Park.

We liked Wales. We went to a home hosted dinner with a local family(arranged by Grand Circle Travel, our tour company) in Caernarvon, Wales. Scenery was wonderful. Castle Howard was where "Brideshead revisited" was filmed. We also went to York Minster, which has the largest amount of stained glass windows in the UK. Another stop was a walking tour of Oxford , conducted by "The Mad Hatter" who also does Harry Potter tours. We visited 5 UK National Parks: Snowdonia, Lake District, North Moors, Cairngorms and Trossachs. We drove along Loch Ness but didn't see Nessie!!
Liz and I are now official Hogwarts wizards and have honorary Oxford degrees. There was a man selling "Trump toilet paper" in Oxford. I didn't buy any, but did take his picture.

Thomas (tom471) | 27 comments I have not mastered the technique of posting pictures with GR reviews, but I recently tried it with an Amazon review of The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad which I read before our Russian river cruise, Moscow to St. Petersburg. Here is the Amazon link with the picture of the sign in my review. Let me know what you think, either by comments here or likes to my review.

I have read other books prior to trips and will try to do this again with Amazon reviews if you folks like it.

Thomas (tom471) | 27 comments I posted some pictures on Facebook with comments. I added the wine cooler picture to my profile.
These pictures are from Castle Howard. The last 2 pictures are by Liz. Castle Howard is a stately mansion, not an actual castle, as in Edinburgh Castle. If the town name is first, then it is an actual castle. The Howard family owned this mansion for over 500 years. It was turned over to the National Trust by the last Howard, who could not afford needed repairs. He was allowed to continue living there until he died a few years ago. He even used to give tours. Katherine Howard was 1 of Henry VIII's wives. The second picture is of an object that had no explanation. I found a docent and asked her," Excuse me, what is this?' She said that it was a wine cooler and held up to 30 bottles. Those Howards knew how to party!!!
