SOLVED. Mystery dying man task writer with writing his biography. [s]

I think I read this book a year or two ago. It was about this man who was like the patriarch of his family and he was old and dying so he employs a writer to write his biography. The book is told from the writer's perspective. What the man really wants the writer to find out was the mystery of his granddaughter or something who went missing. They all live on an island and pretty much every one else in the family hates that the guy is here snooping around into the lives of the family. Please help thanks
