Carried away in Open Secrets

Hey I just finished the short story "carried away" and I struggle to understand the last scene, can anyone give his interpretation please? Thanks

I got lost just like you. But i read in one of the book's reviews, that all what happened was just illusions the character had when she got old.

Same here. I wondered if perhaps the man killed hadn’t been the one she thought? The confusion of John/Jack also.
