Hi all,

So pleased to have found this thread, I have been looking for this book for years and the hope that somebody could find it for me!

I am positive that the main character is called Heather. Her dad dies in an accident and I am sure her mom then dies of a broken heart or kills herself?

A rich uncle in Glasgow takes her in and sends her to a posh school along with her cousins. Everyone hates her at the school. She has an affair with her uncle and then her cousin who she becomes pregnant by. She loses the baby by falling from a horse and when the uncle discovers she is sleeping with the cousin, she runs away.

She then finds someone who owns a garage who takes her in and she takes over running the garage.

And that’s where my memory stops even though it goes on a lot longer! I have no idea of the year unfortunately - it was one of my mothers books that I picked up to read when I was 14/15 so it was definitely before 2001 and due to the style of writing that I remember, it was a very written in the 80’s feel.

It was set in the late 1800’s though I believe, turn of the century. The uncle is a newspaper owner.

It’s surprising I can’t find it using Google’s books excellent search considering I seem to remember a lot. Which brings me to think that I am getting the main characters name wrong but I seem so sure of it!

That’s not it unfortunately, thank you so much for the suggestion though.

Not really, the bit I can remember is that it was grey and think it showed a Glaswegian street as it is the ‘grey city.
