ch 1-7
(view spoiler)[ So I won't lie - I've been scared to pick this up because I was worried it would be very anti-white people and anti-police, and as a dispatcher in law enforcement, I was afraid it was going to make me super angry. So far, that hasn't been the case overall.

I love the family dynamics. Her parents really love her and that is so apparent through the story. I also really enjoy reading about the difference in how she feels she has to behave//speak when she goes from Garden Heights to her school and how she has to pretend to be someone other than herself. It's interesting to learn that mindset and see how it affects her interactions.

As far as the actual shooting scene.. It's such a complicated scene to me. Having working in dispatch for 10+ years and having been through a police academy, I see so many factors here. The cop could have given commands to show his hands and back away from the open vehicle door and not shot Khalil in his back. However, he HAD already told Khalil to stay put while he ran his ID. Initial interactions, Khalil was immediately confrontational and not compliant. Not to say the officer had a reason to stop them to begin with since that has yet to be explained either. Basically, I feel like both parties escalated the situation and it wasn't necessarily a justifiable shooting, but Khalil wasn't innocent in his reactions either. Such a mess for Starr to be caught up in honestly. To be the witness to such a tragedy, to see her childhood friend murdered at ten and then to relive it here. And now to have to deal with detectives who are clearly looking for reasons to blame Khalil and to feel like she can't even talk to friends or anyone really about it. How overwhelming it must be for her. (hide spoiler)]

She just lost it on Chris for being white. And I get it, especially with all that is going on in her life at the moment. But he seems to really care for her so I hope she opens up to him as a person not a race and gives him the chance to do the same. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ There is a lot of racism in this book.. but honestly it's being represented here on both sides. Nothing excuses the cops actions, but one line his father said and Starr's reaction to it made me a little irritated.. he said his son wanted to make a difference in the community and she compared him to slavers.. that attitude is such bs and anti-white and I just can't. Not every white cop is bad, or racist, and some really do want to help their communities become safer and I hate the lumping of that desire in with slavery and trying to "fix" a race. Some cops are total assholes who are racist and do think people need to be fixed or controlled but not every cop who says they want to help their community is.. and end rant, I knew the attitude towards police was going to get to me here, it's why I've avoided this one for so long tbh.

I was super proud of Starr for owning up to Chris being her boyfriend and facing her father's reaction. Also for standing up to her so called friend and her racist comments/behavior. She really is a strong female lead who has been put through hell and is finding herself. (hide spoiler)]

Not story specific but comment re: the narrations.. I hate how the narrator makes all the white girls sound like airheaded valley girls *insert eyeroll*

I adore Chris for being by Starr's side through everything. I adore how much Starr grew through this story. She found her voice, found her strength and her way to be true to herself. That was my favorite part of it all. (hide spoiler)]

I think you @Heather mentioned how annoying the white voices are and I totally agree. But also think her “friends” Hailey and Maya are just supposed to be that obnoxious and shallow and clueless. And also that absolutely is true of a lot of privileged young girls, regardless of color. Chris is super duper sweet, I’m a big fan of him and how much he loves Starr. I’m curious about what will happen between DeVante and Starr’s relationship. I’m hoping nothing happens to anyone in Uncle Carlos household because of his staying there, but I have a feeling it’s leading up to something. I hope I’m wrong! (hide spoiler)]

Khalil didn’t do everything right, but also didn’t do anything to warrant being shot 3 times. Also have you watched the movie? Yes, I love Chris and how they portrayed him. He is so darn sweet! Also, Hailey is the absolute worst and unfortunately there are far too many real life Haileys. :(

Agreed! Chris and Uncle Carlos were among my faves in this story as far as side characters go!

Up to Ch. 6 (view spoiler)[ This book starts with a bang!! Literally… we are not even through Ch. 1 when, Khalil gets killed by a cop. I understand it’s scary out in the streets but this was a little extreme. I feel so bad for Khalil he was just trying to make sure Starr was ok. His mom needs to get her act together for Cameron, and her mom because they need her and what does she do? She is a druggie!!! I like that Starr’s family is there to help out. I am not liking the way the interview at the police station is going. I understand they gotta stick together, but is it really necessary to stick together with a cop that kills people without first making sure? (hide spoiler)]

Up to Ch. 10 (view spoiler)[ I like that her uncle Carlos is trying to be there for them, I see what he is trying to tell her but Starr doesn’t see it as advice, she sees it as him protecting One-Fifteen (115) the cop that killed Khalil. I like that her brother Seven gets along with her so well, I think that moving shouldn’t be a bad thing, you are risking your kids by staying there. I understand that staying and helping out makes sense but when it comes to your kids I am on the mom’s side. (hide spoiler)]

I think those kids just don’t know better and end up in those gangs and end up having short lives, it is so dangerous to have him stay at Carlos’ house but I’m glad that he accepts to take care of him. I love Chris, I think he loves Starr and tries hard to fit in with her and her family that he is just silly. I’m glad he has her back too even though there is really not much he can do. I love Starr’s mom she is so protective but at the same time so loving. (hide spoiler)]

I hope Starr’s mom gets that job and they can finally leave Garden Heights. Who in the heck is shooting up at Starr’s house the night before she has to testify? I really think Maverick needs to cool it down with the whole all cops are bad. I feel so bad for Carlos because he is trying so hard to be a mediator for cops and the black community. I’m happy that Starr decided to testify, and she told her truth. I wanna cry so bad right now. Iesha acting like she can’t stand the kids when she is actually trying to keep them safe. Starr is so smart for seeing that and telling Seven. It’s true though, it’s not Seven’s job to keep her safe, it’s Iesha’s job to keep all the kids safe, and on top of that nothing will happen to the cop! Really? (hide spoiler)]

Ch 3 - I didn't realize some of the finer details that I'd forgotten since I first read it. I can understand Starr’s conflict with not knowing whether to talk to the police or not.
