(view spoiler)[I love the humor of Mia! She puts things how they are with a lot of sarcasm. Maybe that came because of the way she survived between 10 years and being now 16 years. At being 10 years she was a very (mentally) strong child, after loosing her parents. I think Mister Kindly helped her a lot with that. 'Mister Kindly' is a very strange name for something build out of shadows, but it seems to make sense. I wonder what the story behind Tric is. He seems to descend from an important Dweymeri family, but there's more to that. The scene in the Whisperwastes with the kraken was so tense! They reminded me of the sandworms in Dune. So, our travellers reached the Red Church and I've got the feeling that things are now getting started. The tests were really hard, but they survived. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[So, Mia and Tric made it to the Red Church. It's interesting to meet everyone from the Ministry. Solis is a character to not be joked around. The hate of Jessamine could turn ugly against Mia, I think. She should sleep with one eye open, because she's convinced that Mia's father was a traitor and responsible for Jessamine's father dying. Lord Cassius is an interesting mystery and the siblings Marielle and Adonai are terryfing and interesting at the same time. I wonder who killed the Dweymeri boy as I don't think it would be Tric. Starting chapter 16:
(view spoiler)[So, Hush killed the Dweymeri boy. Beacuse of his speechlessness, he's someone to be watching out for. For all the Shahiid, I find the Shahiid of Thruth the most interesting. I ddin't know that she would theach about spells, potions...Her test was also very interesting if not, almost deadly. The Shahiid of Masks isn't my thing and I don't think it's Mias thing also. I've got the feeling that she musn't forget the warning that Naeve gave her. The Red Church gives a lot, but takes much more. Maybe, when Neav was warning to keep the part that truly matters to her the most, it very close and hold on tight, maybe she ment Mister Kindly? It seems that all the Shahiids are different persons from what they were before. They've all changed. Apparently very few Shahiids/Acolytes know about Mia being a darkin. Would she find answers in Lord Casius? The competition to steal all the things from the list sounds interesting. (hide spoiler)]

About the masquerade: that was another test showing the acolytes that they aren't part of the normal world anymore, that they are serving other purposes. I don't want to cross one of those bookworms, but what an interesting library! I was so sad that mr. Kindly fled, but I wonder why that necklace got hem so creeped out. Mia should face her fears without him once in a while, because maybe she's so depended of him. I'm not sure about what happened between Mia and Tric is such a good idea to face her fears and how will their 'thing' evolve in the future. I think that it is because I am listening on audiobook and there isn’t a distinction as to when the perspective changes. Now that I know what to expect, I think it shall start to make more sense.

I rather liked the opening scene. The concept of her sleeping with her mark was amusing and well executed.

I wonder why her mentor is sending her to the Red Church. And what is the Red Church?

Yes, I noticed the cat theme. I am still unclear about her shadow cat. What is that exactly? Does she how shadow powers?

I didn't even notice the footnotes until I read this comment and looked at my physical copy. In the audiobook, the footnotes are spoken immediately so I didn't even know they were a thing. But I agree that they are humorous.

I was also thinking about Throne of Glass while listening to this and making comparisons. =P (hide spoiler)]

When I tried to read this before I was listening on audiobook so I didn’t catch the strange back and forth with the timeline like I should have and that really confused me. But I think that Mia sleeping with her mark, albeit for what sounded like her first time, was telling.

I think that the scene where Mia is a little girl and her father is hanged was very pivotal. I think that this scene marks her vengeance and how she comes to be later on in life.

I liked how spirited Mia was when those guys were messing with her on the ship. I still want to know why her mentor sent her away to meet with this strange Church.

I'm still not entirely sure what they took her mother for. And I am assuming that they threw Mia into the water expecting her to die. (hide spoiler)]

I'm up to chapter 29:
(view spoiler)[Well, now I know what us haunting Mia in her sleep! I never thought that she was responsible for the Truedark Masacre, but she was unprepared to avenge her family. In a way she acted without plan, just with anger and revenge, but I think, if she hadn't stopped or hadn't been stopped, the dark would've totally consumed her. Maybe she couldn't master her powers yet and that can also be a part why she's now in the Red Church. It seems that Mia can use the shadow as a form of transportation: step into a shadow and come out in another. Interesting! I don't think that with Tric is a good idea. I mean, Mr. Kindly got jealous when Mia had her first nightmare - free dream after sleeping with Tric. Carlotta dying, well, that was coming, but Tric taking a bit of the punishment from Mia, well, I don't know, their killers after all, not lovers. Diamo solving Spiderkiller's assignment. Strange, I wonder if he stole Mia's notebook. (hide spoiler)]

I knew Mia wasn't so foolish to go all merry like that about solving Spiderkiller's assignement, but still, she goes over bodies. That was a horrible death he had! It was obvious that Mia and Tric would face each other during Solis's trial, but she let him win. Okay, I understand why she did it (the promise they made to each other having their vengeance), but still...If she fails with Spiderkiller, she looses the chance on becoming a Blade. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Okay...This chapters takes a whole other turn in the story. Hush and Ash telling Mia that she don't belong here, in the Red Church, after all she's been through. Are they right? Mia does have a heart and feelings, she cares about the one she loves, under all that coldness and hardness. So, the Curch produces cold blooded murderers, but is that what Mia is? I have my doubts after this. Will she find peace and rest after having her vengeance? Hush hasn't forget that Mia asked him if he was allright after the scourging, so he did her a favor back: 'kindness reap kindness'. Who's that one friend Mia has, that Hush thalks about? Is that Mr. Kindly or has Lord Cassius to do something with it? I can understand Ash's proud and refusing Mia's help. Otherwise it wouldn't be feeling as a victory for Ash. (hide spoiler)]

Waw, I need to sit down and breath for a moment. I think I haven't breathed during the last chapters. I've finished the book and still, I'm thinking: 'What...??'

(view spoiler)[Well, Mia has a heart. Okay, it's sometimes tucked in very deep in het chest, but her not killing an innocent boy was the right thing to do. The Red Church stands for cold blooded killing, even if the victimes are innocent and Mia isn't made for that. Shame that Mercurio didn't felt the same way. Fortunately Mia discovered what Ozrick and Ashline were up to. I enjoyed the fast pacing that led up to the ultimate confrontation with justicus Remus and I just knew that Ashline would've got the Trinity with her. Even the return of Bastard was hilarious. I didn't expect Lord Cassius to die so very soon and easy. I mean, common, he's the Lord of the Blades after all. I thought maybe with this phial that Mia received from Adonai, he and Marielle would resurrect him to llife, but no. I've found it so sad for Eclipse. Does that mean Mia is now Lady of the Blades, after her anoitment? Mia took Eclips under her care. It's the least she could do. The interaction between the shadowwolf and Mr. Kindly is entertaining. How will that go on? Okay, Mia has now some answers in the book (Mr. Kindly is a little hesitant about reading it to Mia. Will he tell her everything in the book?), but what is that with this 'hunger'? When Mia asked Lord Cassius if he felt the same way she did, he answered that he was feeling 'hungry'. Are the darkins ment to kill each other to feel more powerfull? And what is it with Remus saying he'll send Mia's regards to her brother, Jonnen? Would he still be alive? (hide spoiler)]

I can’t believe that that teacher cut off Mia’s arm! I was not expecting that. Nor was I expecting her to wake up with her arm intact in the next scene. Crazy stuff in this book!

It’s funny how the teachers can see her shadows and her cat but the students don’t seem to.

It was sweet that Tric was waiting for her at her door after the whole arm thing. I almost swooned when he said that he was worried about her. I can tell that they like each other. I wondered about Tric at first but I think that he is on the up and up. I suspect a romance between them. For now, I am liking their friendship. (hide spoiler)]

Now that you mention it, it does remind me of Harry Potter too. Actually, the first thing it reminded me of was The Witcher because Yennefer has her body transformed to be beautiful too much in the same way. So similar it's uncanny. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Tric and Mia getting busy was hot. I like that they admitted that they like each other. It felt genuine and true. I also liked that Tric asked her if them being together like that was wise since they are both assassins and their paths wouldn’t lead to a HEA.

Haha, I thought that it was funny when Ashlyn mentioned the bite marks on the inside of Mia’s thighs and alluded to Tric giving them to her.

I wonder if Ashlyn is genuine or if her “friendship” with Mia is a farce. I can’t figure her out.

Well, we finally got the story about Tric’s face tattoos. It was just awful. I really do hope that he makes his grandfather pay. That man is the worst. I liked the tender moment between Tric and Mia. And I like that he was doubtful about the face-changing thing but she made him realize that his face isn’t his identity. That his heart makes him who he is. It was touching. I also liked that they promised to be allies and carry out the other’s revenge if one of them didn’t make it through the ranks.
