the knife was supposed to be found by somebody centuries ago. But it was not found.that means he didn't reach that place..so the investigators presumed he was murdered.

The Secrets of Hidden Creek is a young adult book I read ages ago, that starts with the discovery of a civil war soldier's diary.

And if that isn't it, at least this will serve as a free bump. :)
