QNPoohBear | 740 comments PASS on Sanditon. What on earth was THAT?! It was a bizarre mix of Bronte and modern with a slap dash of the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I kept yelling at the TV "It doesn't work like that!!!!"

Jane is weeping in her grave. They missed the point of satire and comedy totally.

On the plus side, in Season 3, Charlotte finally put her hair up, sort of and some of the dresses looked right or at least the prints. I didn't yell "What are they wearing?!"

As for Sanditon, I wonder if the 'ton' bit came from Brighton? The 'Sandi' bit could just refer to a sandy beach?

Not quite sure what..."

This made me chuckle because place names are very regional. Oconomowoc makes most people outside of Wisconsin stare and stumble. It is probable a French corruption of a native word as are many place names in the state.

and with recent adaptation, when Jane Austen refer to the character as "Half mulatto" (3/4 white 1/4 black) the director automatically interpreted as full black.

what a joke, they can't even respect Jane's decision on the character which seemingly inspired by Sally Hemming who was half mulatto herself

QNPoohBear | 740 comments I would be surprised if Jane knew who Sally Hemmings was in her lifetime. Mixed race children of enslavers were not uncommon in the West Indies and the American South. Miss Lambe has money. In the show she was indeed interpreted as biracial. The last few episodes were all about Georgiana fighting for her inheritance from her father and searching for her mother who was formerly enslaved by her father.

The major departure from Jane's style was in the silly dramatic romance plot. I didn't like that or all the subplot about Mary finding her voice or the Edward Denham as evil seducer and wicked brother plot or any of it! Just Arthur and even his plot veered off into the bizarre. What happened to the sisters and the gentle poking fun of their hypochondria?

exactly, I think they don't understand the changes they have made would affect the character, if Miss Lambe was 3/4 white she technically wouldn't feel guilty taking his father's money made from enslaving black people, but if she is just biracial (who looked full black) she would feel disgusted, unless she plans to use the money to better enslaved black people, I don't see how she can even fight for slave money with any dignity.

they try to make it woke, clearly they have no intention of respecting Jane Austen's style and storytelling!

QNPoohBear | 740 comments If Jane had anyone in mind as the model for Miss Lambe, it was likely Dido Belle Lindsay Belle: The Slave Daughter and the Lord Chief Justice but we'll never know what Jane intended for Miss Lambe but certainly not what the Tv writers decided. Everyone was so modern and Charlotte finally puts her hair up and remembers her bonnet in the last season yet she's still running around doing whatever she thinks is right.
