I handed the last paragraph to my husband, admittedly I had a bit of a tear in my eye, and I said "This is why" He read it and smiled. That last word from the hero is the reason I love romance novels so much. It was a sweet pleasure to read this book. I found the voice, the narration, the forgivable changes in POV, so refreshing. It reminded me perhaps too much of "Flowers From the Storm". Because I loved that book so much, I felt like this would not live up. Then I found that it didn't have to. It turned into its own strong narrative and I began to see the story for its own.
So glad it was chosen for this challenge. I would have never found it otherwise. I look forward to more books from Teresa Medeiros. I'm a little curious how her writing has changed over the years. This is the style of writing that sent me head over heels into romance.

So glad you enjoyed it! Now I will have to go back and read the last paragraph again.

Yes! It was the same for me. Absolutely wonderful and swoon worthy until the thing happens. It's weird but I still overall enjoyed the book and will remember it fondly!
"You asked me once if I would still love you when your lips were puckered with age and your eyes were faded. I can assure you that I will still love you when I have only the strength (and the scant teeth) left to gum those puckered lips. I shall love you when your bones are sharp enough to pierce my fragile flesh. I shall love you when the light in my own eyes fades for good and yours is the last sweet face I see. Because I am and ever shall be…

I'm all weepy again dammit.
Well I'm a bit late to the party but I've finally started it. I bought it ages ago at a bargain price and I've never read anything by this author before. But finally gotten to it. Yay!
Well I'm a bit late to the party but I've finally started it. I bought it ages ago at a bargain price and I've never read anything by this author before. But finally gotten to it. Yay! I remember now I read the first chapter or so when I first got it and didn't get hooked at the time, but seeing all these positive comments I now really do want to read the whole thing. But, sadly, somewhere or other (not here) I've seen the plot twist spoiler. Wish I hadn't :/ Oh well.
I'm at 13% and keeping an open mind. In some ways Gabriel's behaviour seems OTT, but I'm trying to place it in context and perhaps it's not really that unrealistic. Poor man. How lonely and desperate he must be. At present the h is a little unknowable, though. It's not clear why she applied for the job. But it's still early days. (And I wish I hadn't seen any spoilers.....)

Glad I am not the only straggler Jan! I have not seen the twist spoiler though!
I am enjoying it so far. At about 45%.

Yeah, keep away from those spoilers!
I'm at 55% and liking it. Just finished Chapter 13 and was quite moved by the (view spoiler).

Now 71%. I was kind of expecting that (view spoiler) but I'm also a little disappointed. It seems kinda (view spoiler). But I wasn't expecting Gabriel would (view spoiler) at least, not at this stage of the book.

Yes, I agree. There are aspects about this that make it part of the plot, but it is a bit too convenient.

Well, I've finished. 3 stars, maybe 2.5? I liked parts of it but didn't exactly love it. I don't plan to seek out more books by this author.

Hmmm...they didn't bother me, but they weren't memorable either. I would have to read those parts again.
I saw that we were reading this and (kinda late!) jumped in. Been wanting to get to this forever.
I saw that we were reading this and (kinda late!) jumped in. Been wanting to get to this forever. I really enjoyed this, up until the end—which seemed to be the common consensus here on the group. I thought the story was so charming and sweet, but the spoilery twists/surprises felt jarring to me.

I was anticipating this development as well, and I was NOT pleased about it. It was very "magical" and, as Joanna said, convenient. It also felt like it wasn't necessary, you know? I don't see why the author needed to treat (view spoiler) as if it were an obstacle, when it's just (view spoiler).
