Fear and Trembling is a fictionalized and satirized account of the author's experiences while working in a large corporation in Japan. Being non-Japanese and being female were already huge obstacles, but working under unreasonable supervisors made the situation far worse. During her year-long contract, she started at the bottom of the corporate ladder and managed to go down from there. Who knew you could actually go down when you are already on the bottom rung? We learn of the cultural clashes she faces and the differences in the Japanese business hierarchy compared to that of the West. She is in a sad and difficult situation, but still manages to make it humorous and a bit snarky. It all worked out in the end though, since she returned to Belgium and wrote her first book.
