CHAPTER 1

Dragons that have religion and deathbed regrets for old choices, things done and undone? This...is cannibalism made civilised...😂😂😂 and gentrified and moral...bcuz it is not just the babies they eat, Gin...but yeah even I did a double-take at the eating bit...

Harshness of it reminded me of Sparta a bit. They threw out their "weak" babies and old ppl into the cold.

What sort of a guy is this Penn? To deny when the dying father requests absolutiom...he mentions "fear of discovery" first repeatedly...and his conscience second...but then his heart relents with the love for his dad...his heart is in the right place...he jezzt might be "The Conflicted One with The Conscience" 😂

“The inhabitants of the dining room knew it is not elegance that makes a pleasant gathering but the temperament of those gathered together. By selection of like to like, all the unpleasant members of the party had gathered in the speaking room, and all the pleasant in the dining room.”

I found this read on a 'Fantasy of Manners' list, which was described as 'Austen + Fantasy', with plenty of witty conversations, court intrigues and fantasy weirdness. This book in particular was described as 'Pride and Prejudice. With dragons' xD

Urgh, I DESPISE that arrogant, calculative Frelt. It annoyed me to no end that, when considering which sister he would rather marry, it did not occur to him that they might say no. He even thought something along the line of 'she will be grateful for my offer'.

I was surprised that she panicked that much. There was a part about her raising her wings when he approached her, and how no male has ever been this close to her. I'm wondering if there isn't more to it. You know, some instinctive response to being close to a male. They are dragons, after all. Or maybe she was really, REALLY grossed out xD (hide spoiler)]

So the colours seem REALLY important then...such a rigid society...they are all worried she has turned "pink"...i.e. is therefore compromised...now I fully get how repulsive Frelt is to have tried to underhandedly force her in this way...son of unmarried...he KNEW!

How worried the brothers are about her future...😣 but also how pedantic/practical/worldy are their manly considerations. Can't believe they even considered such harsh alternatives, even tho' they love her + what a sweet promise between the sisters esp at such a moment, my respect for Haner rose...always wanted a sister...whenever I read abt sisterly tropes...

5. Imagine the size of that carriage with Amer and Penn and Sel in it...this was what some ppl who wrote reviews for this book were saying they had to suspend disbelief with...the size of them carriage wheels and ??horses??

6. What did you make of Penn's letter to his wife? So formal, how he worries about what to say to her/not to disturb the peace. I'm thinking he isn't comfortable or trusting...that letter says a lot abt their relationship...so subtly! *impressed face*

Oh, so a female dragon turns pink when approached too close by a male? And it's supposed to be irreversible? URGH

It's like blushing, except it's permanent. The whole deal with the marriage and herbs to get rid of the blush is like she got knocked up (and drank some weird tea to get rid of the unwanted baby) but she did nothing but stand too close to that jerk. And HE KNEW what he was doing. GRRRR

How her brothers, although full of good intentions, were planning not so good futures for her had me fuming. The women seem very... subdued in this society. Me not likey. That's why I usually don't read historical stuff; the place of the women in the society (or lack thereof) always pisses me off.

There was a part about Fenn shuddering about the thought of what could happen to a female dragon not maiden nor wife... What could happen indeed? Could she be simply taken, raped and forced to lay clutches after clutches, which would inevitably lead to her death? (Cause yeah, apparently, having babies is potentially lethal. YAY) Or simply EATEN? :O

I agree with you, the pact between the two sisters was very sweet. How they vowed to protect each other no matter what.

Thought the same thing about my sister when reading this chapter. But she is way more draconic than those civilized (but cannibalistic) dragons. (hide spoiler)]

I was a little busy this weekend, I visited a music festival on friday, had to work all day yesterday and today we went hiking... So I'm incredible tired right now... But it was great!

From where I live it's not far to an area called 'Eifel', actually it's an mointain range and the surrounding area. There're big forests and lakes and castles one could visit. Today we were here:



The lake you see, is germany's second largest reservoir (is this the right word? It's an artificial lake for drinking water). :)

1 & 2. We're seriously on the same wavelength because I SWEAR I highlighted (on my Kindle) the very same quotes and thought 'Oh, gotta type 'em for Zaara' xD

3. Yes, it seems that our proper second-son is not proper at all in Irieth.

4 & 5. I was giggling imagining dragons on trains & carriage. The wagons must be ENOURMOUS :)

6. With that letter, we immediately understand that Penn is not very close to his wife, but mostly walking on eggshells. It emphasizes what we saw earlier, that female dragons are to be left out of important business and not to be upset.

7. Yes, they have to be proper, and submissive, and dependent on the males, and lay plenty of clutches even though it engender their lives, and, in a world where they can be EATEN, they don't even have claws to defend themselves. URGH.

- Berend is pregnant again. I'm predicting her death. That asshole husband is making lay clutches too close even though it's very dangerous for her....

- I was both horrified and laughing at the calm sister (I'm having trouble remembering her name ^_^") arriving at her sister's home to find out that sickly little Lamerak had been eaten. CHOMP! One less dragonling!

- Berend & her husband eating those two hatchling at the farm was HORRIBLE. With the mother begging and crying, and Daverad's disdain... I REALLY HATE HIM! I kinda want him to get eaten now.

- Avan and his lover-clerk... *shakes head*
I understand better now why he didn't really want his sister to come live with him :O

Yeah, like Virginie said, I don't read a lot of historical/Victorian stuff for this reason. It's something you expect in books set in this time, but no fun unless the girls are rebelling! :D

Naaah, sadly no and I think it's taken from the air, from a helicopter, hot air balloon or glider. But I thought I should give you a little impression, because this place really is beautiful. And it really looks like this, except from the fact that there's less water and it's not that green right now because of the heatwave... Most of the meadows and fields went dry and they are rather yellowish and some of the trees lost their leaves as if it's fall already. But still the view was stunning and we had a great time :)

- Felin seems nice but... too subservient? I don't like how she restrains her thoughts, and agrees with her husband on all things in public. She feels a bit like a Selendra that gave up her freedom.
- I really like Sher so far. He's a breath of fresh air in that stuffy society. It's quite obvious (I think) that he's going to fall for witty, funny Sel and not the proper Gelener Telstie.
- His mother though.... Urgh. That meddling old dragoness, set in her ways and unwilling not only to change but to even listen to other people's points of view. If she's the one that brought up Felin, I understand better Felin's behavior.
She's going to HATE Selendra if Sher tries to have a relationship with her. (hide spoiler)]

- Hats... on dragons? :O
- Avan encounters Rimalin and Mother & Daughter Telstie at the attorney's office. The world is small. I wonder what business proposition Rimalin has for Avan....
- Blest Telstie is already prepping for dowry arrangements. She and Sher's mother really want them married, and soon. Poor Sher!
- Avan went all dueling on that Kest dude, and smashed him! They're acting all civilized but still, attacking each other like that is OK. Weird, weird society...
- Not sure what to think of Sebeth being affiliated to the church of the Old Believers. I don't really understand why confession is such a terrible thing to begin with.

THE EXALT APPROVES AMER: Amer asked for her wings to be tightly bound; I find it incredulous that servants have bound wings to begin with!
The interview did not go well for Amer... I'm disliking Exalt Benandi more and more. She tricked Amer into admitting it was her choice to follow Selendra, but what was she supposed to do? Go to Deverak, where she would probably be EATEN?

FIRSTDAY AT BENANDI: Poor Selendra is having a hard time getting used to her new life.

“I’m not thinking about doing her good,” the Exalt said, drawing back a little. “I’m wondering about the propriety of the thing.”

Give her some slack, you evil old dragoness! Her father just died, and she had to leave everything she knew, including her clutchmate/sister! 😠

SELENDRA AND SHER: (hide spoiler)]

When Selendra heard that she was invited to a formal dinner party at the Place she was horrified.
“I’d much rather stay here and read,” she said. “Must I go?”

Sher takes Selendra flying, and started considering her as wife-material for the very reasons the dragon society deems her improper: she easily speaks her mind and laugh, loves flying and wild places, etc. And Selendra is merely thinking "Yay, I got a new nice brother!". Mmmh, that's not how he means to get you to join the family, naive little Sel xD

A DINNER PARTY: Ohohoho, that didn't go well! Selendra made a scene when her father got (very politely) insulted, and Sher took her side against his mother & Gelener!
I like that Felin seems to genuinely want Sher's happiness; I wonder which side she'll take in the conflict that will inevitably happen. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 8: The Writ Is Received (view spoiler)[

THE COMFORTS OF DAVERAK: Oh wow. And I was already pissed off at the treatment of servants in the previous chapters... So they have to give up flying, have their wings so tightly bound it's hurting them but will get eaten if they're 'ailing'... And all that not for a good pay, but so the hatchlings in their family won't get devoured so that Berend can have more children? And their masters call themselves civilized? What the hell?!?

THE WRIT ARRIVES: Iiiiick, Deverak didn't take the lawsuit thingy well! Got so pissed he threatened Hanner and breathed fire!

A SECOND DINNER PARTY:

“If he didn’t like you it wouldn’t just have been shouting,” Berend said, placidly.

Oh wow.... He actually would have attacked her in front of her own sister, for something she didn't do!

LETTERS: I love the sisterly relationship between Haner and Selendra :D
Haner saw right through Sel's "Sher is already betrothed" talk, and told her she'll win the guy! Hahaha

1. Dragons wearing hats...in any other book it would be silly and I'd be all nerf. Here...it's just...part of the society's ways and norms.

2. I LIKE Sabeth....impulsively, immediately...go figure!
They are the cutest couple...compare them to Penn & Felin or even Berend & *yerk* Daverik (Ima jezzt call Daverak or Dvorak or whatever his face is...Dave...from now ok)...where was I?
Yeah...the most loving, the most comfortable with each other, the most open and truthful (see how he discusses all his plans with her), the most space-giving (she tells him her honest feels abt the stupidity of a lawsuit but doesn't nag/the gold/her millinery bills...haha did I mention OPEN?), also they are the most demonstratively affectionate/sexy...in this order I noticed it + is this the same Avan? He is so different at home and here with her. I hope both the sisters soon come HERE. Seems the jolliest home so far of the three.

Huh, could it be bcuz they are the only UNMARRRIED couple...haha 😂😜😄
Anyway...already they are my fave ppl in the book.
What do you think of all the couples so far, Virginie? Well...until Selendra meets "the as yet unknown hero of the book."

4. This racial prejudice against the "Yargs"...still not clear but looks like a comquered rAce of dragons themselves? Reminds me of the Parshmen/Parshendi stuff...

2. Later Daverak lost it completely...scary how amgry he got, no? Psycho. Inthought the scene was well-written. I was scared, I thought he's lose it and hit Haner or something. Apparently this WAS the menacing tone the author attempted to comvey...

2. At that point, I don't particularly like of dislike Sebeth. She is quite interesting, that's for sure. I guess I'm waiting to know more to form an opinion.
Their couple feels the most natural of all the couples in this book. They are what the others should be: partners. They really are open, honest and comfortable with each other. You can really see they value each other, Avan listens to her.
All the other couples in this books were dragons matched by their parents for political advantages, money, etc. They chose each other, and that changes everything.

3. Well... Sebeth wouldn't need to hide to cheat on him since... Isn't she already? More like, Avan isn't expecting her to be exclusive, as long as she doesn't rub his nose in it.
That priest seems quite sketchy! I think she'll be betrayed, and will have to make a choice between Avan and the Church eventually... Or cause him embarrassment and damage his status.

4. Yeah, I'm not really sure what that 'Yarges' thing is about. It was mentioned they have no wings?

Yup, Berend got used to ignoring all the horrible things her husband do. Mistreating the servants, eating healthy dragonlings, etc. She's all like 'Nope. Not my place to argue. Not my problem.'

I totally agree about Haner going all Hermione, especially after her letter to Selendra. GO, HANER, GO! FREE THE SERVANTS! :D

And... We chose the same quote! Dave seems quite... Unstable? I was really afraid he was going to hurt Haner. Even his KIDS are afraid...

Yes, it is. I'll be out Sat-Sun-Mon. A coworker is letting me stay at his appartement in a skying station. I'll take books and all, but probably will switch off the phone, leave the computer and simply breathe the mountain air, and hike, and laze in the sun, and read. I really need to decompress, I've been sick, shit keeps happening both at work and on a personal level, and I need a few days where I don't have to talk to anyone :p

Anyway, I'll probably post chapter 9, 10, 11 and 12 Monday evening/Tuesday morning. I'll keep with the one chap/day 'cause I have other books I want to finish during the week-end. Then I'll race the last four chapters :p
