Plot points (Spoiler?)

I have a couple of points about the plot in this book. The author has gone to a great deal of trouble to describe the lamps (lights) used in this book including where they were purchased. The problem is that although the store mentioned in the book does sell camping type lamps they don't flash. I think it would be rather difficult (and possibly expensive) to get a flashing battery powered light that could be mistaken for navigation lights. Also at two points in the book to police are searching drains (including digging up yards) for blood and tissue samples. This seems both needless and expensive as none of the deaths took place in a house and there were no missing victims.
