Usually, you will not be able to follow the plot unless you read or listen in order. But Goodreads users can be an excellent resource in determining whether a series is truly consecutive.

Dee (austhokie) | 1947 comments It depends on the series - because the same rules don't apply to all

Give us some examples and we may be able to help

Jonathan Dunsky (dunsky) Some series are one continuous story and need to be read in order. The Lord of The Rings trilogy is an example of such a series. Other series can be read out of order. Often, an author will state on his/her website what the recommended reading order is.

Mara Pemberton (marapem) | 233 comments I love reading series in order, but the publishers, audiobook sites, Amazon, and many other book sites don't release series in order.

It sometimes takes quite a while to even find the first book in the series.

Saeed | 18 comments I was going to post the same question. I find it interesting that some series are published in an order that is different from the "chronological storyline" order (example : The Stainless Steel Rat)
