Hey girls, I have been thinking...since the book has 72 chapters in total, should we maybe make a schedule. This helped me last time I did a read-a-long. It was kinda nice to have "check points" where we can discuss. I hope its ok with all of you? =]

Okay, I'm 18 chapters in

Rafe (view spoiler)[ I hate that she's gravitating to him. I think he's so fickle about whether he's willing spare her and his life will always come along with assassins. They may send another if he doesn't end up killing her soon :( (hide spoiler)]

Kaden (view spoiler)[ I can't lie. I really like him. I like that he came after her but hasn't told her who he is. I wish she was gravitating towards him, because I think between the two men - he's obviously there for better reasons (hide spoiler)]

I agree, Trisha, though I hadn't thought of the (view spoiler)[ papers being maybe something that explains why she doesn't have those powers that were expected of her. Though every once in a while there are those phrases or sentences in italic print on the page, that make it seem like something is coming to her, like the powers or something. Though it would have been said I guess if it were. But she knew something was wrong with Mikael. The thought suddenly came to her. It was mentioned a couple times that the powers would let her know things. (hide spoiler)]

Rafe (view spoiler)[ I also agree here, I don't like him. So you think he is the assassin? I like the fact that we don't know, but I also think he is the assassin. A few things make me think this. Just little snippets of things he or Kaden say or do make me think Kaden is the prince and Rafe is the assassin. Actually just from the beginning when they walked in it's what I thought.

One thing that made me think that is that he has those scars on his hands, and the assassin sleeps with his knife under his pillow. I usually sleep with my hand under my pillow and can easily imagine getting cuts and scrapes if there was a knife there. It was said that Rafe has the scars and scrapes. (hide spoiler)]

Kaden (view spoiler)[ He seems nice, it just seems like he is trying to get to know her more, and that's what the prince wanted to do, to see who she is, this person who was bold and ran away like he wasn't brave enough to do. SoI really think he is the prince.

Though, when first sitting at the table, he had his head down, as if he was ashamed. So that made me falter a bit in my thoughts, that maybe he saw her, liked her and was ashamed that he has to kill her. Since before he met her he was thinking about how he loses a part of himself every time he does. (hide spoiler)]

In any case (view spoiler)[ I wouldn't want Lia to end up with a guy who has killed many like an assassin. It would be great if the prince and her fell in love and decided to run away together, live in a town like the one they are in now, and then someday they find out who they really are..

But I agree, she will have to answer for her actions at some point. It is only logical that they will find her someday, probably soon, and she will be taken or something. (hide spoiler)]

Lia (view spoiler)[ She seems ok, I like her bravery and how she isn't willing to just sit still and put up with something she doesn't like. Though, if I was her, I would have made this escape a longer time before the wedding and simply gone to inspect the prince she was to marry, as she said she wanted. And then she could decide if she would run away. Though I guess for her, the life of a princess simply isn't appealing at all. (hide spoiler)]

Paulina (view spoiler)[ I like her. I like how she is described to have a tender heart. It really does seem that way and I am sad for her about how the guy she thought was her true love betrays her.. Those are the kind of things that make a tender heart harden. I hope she doesn't lose her tenderness because of this, especially since it seems that she is pregnant. I really hope she proves to be strong and doesn't completely break because of the abandonment. (hide spoiler)]

I really like the story so far.
I'll admit, I very rarely like the writing of books in 1st person. 1st person has to be very skillfully done to be enjoyable to read. It has to have a descriptive, storytelling feel to it, and this author has succeeded.
More often than not, the books I've read in 1st person just get annoying. The writing is usually just made up of statements, or so it feels and I want to scream at the narrator to stop it.
But in this one, I LOVE how the 1st person writing is done. It shows the skill of the writer!

Ok, I know I haven't gotten to chapter 37 yet, I just read chapter 26. But I just have to mention something.
So spoiler for chapter 26:
(view spoiler)[ Rafe is saying "I had seen plenty of bloody necks before...." So the assassin simply HAS to be him. Though it's very possible still, that the author is making it really hard to guess and just confusing us with all of this. Though for now, I still have it quite set in my mind that Kaden in the prince and Rafe is the assassin.

Though, why would he not be able to get the image out of his mind if he was the assassin? Because he must have imagined it when he watched her sleep and knew what he had to do. Eh. No, he is the assassin. :D (hide spoiler)]

I haven't read much more yet, and this isn't a spoiler or anything, but I am still convinced it is Rafe who is the assassin! The reason I think he might not be, is because it would be a big twist and maybe the author wants it to be a big shock to readers or something. So far I have to agree with you and even just the feel of Rafe makes me think it's him :D

I will say that a few details make me doubt my conviction. Can't remember what ones right now though..

Another thing I thought of in chapter 31 that makes me even more convinced that its Rafe who is the assassin (view spoiler)[ The assassin said in chapter 30 that he has seven more days before he has to kill her. The ending of that chapter made it seem that he was going to go all out to spend his time with her and be with her before he has to kill her. Then in chapter 31, they're kissing. He openly admits his feelings and they get together in a way. Though Kaden seemed to want to as well. So, still, doesn't prove anything. But it does make me lean even more towards it being Rafe being the killer! (hide spoiler)]

And, one comment on chapter 34 (view spoiler)[ I don't like how Rafe just comes up to her and gets all touchy kissing her everywhere. I know they have known each other for a month or so now, even so. The way he did it, makes it sound seductive and I'm just not a fan of that kind of stuff, especially when they just kissed for the first time the previous night! It's like, they're friends, then when they decide there's something more, the friendship goes away and it becomes all about the sexual tension and energy. I don't like that. (hide spoiler)]

Ok, 37 chapters done.

Who is who (view spoiler)[ Umm... uuh... hmm. grr. :D Now I really think Rafe is the prince. Now I think all the rest of the stuff was to fool the readers.
Rafe said his parents are dead, just like Lia said her parents are dead. Why would the assassin say that? His parents surely wouldn't be well known so the assassin could easily tell her even his parents names. If the assassin's parents really are dead, then he wouldn't have hesitated, he would even have been able to tell stories of them. But Rafe didn't.

Also, just the way he keeps trying to tell her something. I doubt the assassin would keep wanting to tell her he is there to kill her but the prince might want to tell her he is the prince she was to marry.

And, Rafe said that he basically loved her from the moment they met. I'm sure that the assassin would have tried to keep himself from feelings in the beginning.

AND, now I'm starting to think more about the horse that has been mentioned a few times. Rafe's horse is supposedly really a grand one. Lia even said he is grander than the horses of her own family, and in the beginning she said that the horses of her family were the best. So even though I am sure that the assassins must have great horses to be able to track people down, I don't think they would have horses that are better than a royal families horses that are supposed to be the best in the land.

Oh, and when the assassin said he has seven more days left, now, seeing how they both acted at the dance thing, I think it is Kaden who is the assassin, because Rafe is being very bold. If he was about to have to kill her and he has any heart at all, he wouldn't be so bold when he will try to kill her soon. But Kaden, he is hesitant and isn't showing his feelings so drastically. So he probably is ashamed of having to kill her and wants to get attached but also doesn't want to get attached t her.

I mean, he was so.. unlikable in the beginning, but now he doesn't seem so bad. I'm starting to think that the assassin wouldn't act rude or blunt like Rafe has, because he would be afraid of someone guessing what he was after, so maybe Kaden being nice and, well, quieter than Rafe shows he is the assassin. OH! I just thought of something esle! Still chapter 37 (view spoiler)[ The prince was not happy about how she escaped and ran off, when he didn't have the guts to even when he wanted to do the same. He wasn't even going to speak to her! So, that might explain why Rafe was so not nice in the beginning! He wasn't even going to talk to her, but when he found that he liked her, he just went one step up, instead of not talking, he talked to her but wasn't the nicest guy around. Then slowly as he fell in love with her, he got more likable!

Yes. this is what I am sticking with. That is why Rafe wasn't likable in the beginning and why he is now growing on me. Because he dropped that act of not wanting anything to do with the princess he who had the guts to do what he didn't.

And, well, Much more is said about Rafe than Kaden. And I suppose the story is more about the prince because he is the one she ran away from. (hide spoiler)]

Lia (view spoiler)[I like her, though I don't feel we get to see much of her. I mean, she is narrating and we get her thoughts on things, but more often she is narrating what is happening. I don't mind though, we get enough of her to see who she is, she has grown as a character and I like her. (hide spoiler)]

Pauline (view spoiler)[ I'm glad she stopped mourning but I am seriously dreading the moment when she finds out that Lia lied to her. I hope she realizes that Lia only did it to spare her. I'm sure she will find out at some point. Though I think Lia probably should have told the truth. Eh, I guess this book is called the Kiss of Deception for more reasons than just everone pretending to be someone else. :D (hide spoiler)]

The gift (view spoiler)[I knew it :D Lia does have the gift, or some kind of gift. She has felt or heard quite a few things so far. Maybe they have been looking for the wrong gift all along so thought she doesn't have one at all. Maybe it's just showing itself only now. (hide spoiler)]

So there's my thoughts. I certainly hope the author doesn't throw us any more twists making me change my mind from the things I have now decided on! :D

Now that I had already decided that he is the prince and that he was not nice in the beginning simply because he had planned to not like her and to not even speak to her,just see who she is, well, now I find I am liking him a lot and am easily able to forgive him for the way he was in the beginning.

The camp (view spoiler)[ I wonder who the old woman is. Is she Gaudrel herself? Well, not Gaudrel, but the child hat is mentioned in some of the texts in between chapters, the one speaking to her. Kaden said to be weary of the woman. So she must have some strong power.

It seems kind of weird, she is their prisoner, I mean, the prisoner of Kaden and those guys, not the camp, and yet they are fine with having her be treated like a princess. I mean, it's fine and all, I'm happy that the people of the camp are nice and treating her good. How they help and are friendly. But I just wouldn't have thought that the ones who took her would be happy bout that.

Anyway, i do like these people. Seems like the kind who don't want to live life the ordinary way like everyone else does, and they have their beliefs and they live peacefully, happily, treating anyone as a friend. Seems nice (hide spoiler)]

The papers (view spoiler)[ Are they the last Testaments of Gaudrel that we are reading in between chapters? I think I'm going to go back and read just the in between chapter parts all together. maybe they make sense of something in some way when read like that. (hide spoiler)]

Even though a lot is happening, there's not really much else I can think of to talk about.

I wonder what will happen when (view spoiler)[Lia finds out who Rafe really is. Rafe said he wanted to take her to his kingdom, so that she wuold be safe there from her father. So he must think no one there wants to hurt the girl who ran away from the alliance. Maybe he will take her there now? I'm sure trouble would await there as well.. (hide spoiler)]

OH!! And about the map in the beginning. (view spoiler)[The map inside the cover, at least it\s there in my book, WOW, the scale is NOT what I had imagined. In the beginning when Lia and Pauline traveled to Terravin, I checked and was shocked that what looked like a short distance was so far, took 10 days, well, would have been 7 or 8. But now, when it was such a long time, to reach just The City of Dark Magic, wow that is some huge amount of land! That magic city is just at the end of the river thing from Terravin! The cities on the map just look so big.

And it seems they really are taking a route that is very, very much off the beaten track, because the Gaudrel tribe is higher up north. (hide spoiler)]

Ooooh, I can°t wait. Though my online studies started a couple weeks early, so I had some things to do very suddenly and couldn°t finish reading in that last sitting. I did get further and now only have 60 pages left. I will be finishing a bit later!

Ok, so it did take me a while to read the last 60 or so pages because I had a ton of work to do.

SO...

Lia (view spoiler)[ I love how we get to see more of her and how she really begins to grow in to who she is - a princess.

I think all leaders should be like that, willing to step down and do the work that every citizen should, how when no one else was willing to step down and take the horse out of his misery, she showed grace and courage, doing it for Eben. Also in the beginning already, she is able to treat others normally even though she is royalty and she does the dirty work too right along with them. And by the end she has really com in to her role as a princess and is graceful, authoritative and also humble in the sense that you could tell she that as a queen she would actually lead her people, not just command them to do something, but go before her people and show them an example. I like that about her a lot. (hide spoiler)]

Rafe and Kaden (view spoiler)[ I hate how Kaden kissed her and how he still wants her.. saying he will make a life for her. I just... no. (hide spoiler)]

The ending (view spoiler)[ the ending was so emotional. If I had a tendency to cry in books, I would have cried a few times in the last 40 pages or so. At Walthers death and the burial, the way all those people were moved and joined her in the digging of graves, her blessings to the people and determination to bury them all.. at her reunion with Rafe, how joyous and emotional that was.. (hide spoiler)]

I want to know too.. but I have a feeling she was working with the Scholar. remember how Gwyneth told Lia that there are spies and that's the reason Gwyneth was told to keep watch, that she has something to do with the spies and assassins. My guess is that she has worked for the Scholar, and maybe is still working for him or something. I do hope she is a rogue spy and is only pretending to do what the Scholar says if she is working for him. And is actually on Lia's side.. who knows.. (hide spoiler)]

I really applaud the author. The writing is beautiful. I really usually hate 1st person, it's so difficult to get right. But she did it perfectly. Perfectly. And it was so emotional. Like I said, I don't usually cry in books. I shed 1 single tear at the end of Mockingjay in the epilogue, where Katniss is speaking of how (view spoiler)[ the memories still haunt her but Peeta helps her get through it (hide spoiler)] and also in one other book, I cried from joy.
If I had a tendency to cry in books, I would have in this one. I basically cried without any tears in the last maybe 40 pages. The emotion came through the writing and straight into my heart.

I will definitely be reading the next book. I would pay extra to get it like, now. AAhhhh..
