the light bearers are those with the genetically gifted ability to generate energy from within them. this is the same energy that the city runs on and it's called luster. this energy they produce can be used for more than just the general powering, it can be utilized as a defense mechanism to fry people alive, to throw them back, to blind (in certain levels of intensity of course), and to obscure. some people can bend it to their wills differently than others. they all reside within the lowest tier of the city, hiding from the foremen that primarily hunt them down. they struggle to keep a low profile.

synths are light bearers or general humans from the lower class who have been spliced with technology - losing their agency completely as they're reprogrammed to do the government's bidding. they are most often found on the highest tier serving the political families - or rather - monitoring the political families for the government. but due to a rising rebellion that's begun stirring within the lower two levels, synths have been escaping, taken into hiding by those with the skills to unlock them from their technological prisons. those in the upper class are simply taught that synths are just humanoid robots, they cant feel or think for themselves, and they're typically treated as such. they no longer age.

cyborgs are humans with cybernetic enhancements. robotic arms or legs and others of the like, they upgrade a lot of their hardware through the black market trade which makes them far more prominent amongst the lowest class, where freedom is ironically at its highest. they usually have increased agility or strength, it depends on their enhancements of course - they also age slower than most and are more likely to become hackers.

foremen are those plucked from their families at young ages, men and women alike that had an incredibly high athletic proficiency during the aptitude tests. typically taken from the upper class though occasionally chosen from the middle, foremen are divided by a few ranks. keter foremen are sent to the lowest depths of the city to hunt down light bearers for reconditioning. euclid foremen are sent to the middle class where they're trained to do the mundane policing, standing along street corners, checking bags for weapons, investigating crime scenes. nothing particularly special. thaumiel foremen are the harshest of the harsh, trained to kill if necessary, trained in programming and computer languages, with a vast skillset they carefully monitor those on the highest level, often assigned to suspicious people specifically. though some foremen have lately been.. questioning what side they're loyal to.

white hat hackers hack for political causes and are one of the biggest threats the government faces currently. the second most powerful hacking group, they openly oppose the forces at work within the government itself and do so by freeing synths, vandalizing public property and moving between layers of the city without much of a problem, bypassing security without so much as a second thought. they aim to expose the corruption of public officials and to educate the masses about what's really going on. they do have a hard time getting past foremen though, and while they have the hacking skill, they lack a lot of the physical capability - and are almost constantly on the move because of how much they're hunted on the daily.

black hat hackers hack for the express purpose of personal gain. they have their sights set on not breaking the system but owning it for themselves and puppeteering society to meet their own ideals. they want to be on top, and it's their selfishness that holds them back from progressing forward in their endeavors. there aren't many requirements for those who join, so a lot of people within are incredibly inexperienced and are simply there for the thrill of it. they take up residence in the middle tier.

gray hat hackers have obfuscated motivations, a lot of their actions are difficult to understand when looked at from a singular point of view, but they do seem to be working towards something. because the reasons that they do what they do are so unclear, it's hard to determine when they'll attack and where they'll attack, as they've been known to free synths, but also take down white hat and black hat servers. they dont take sides. their main base of operations is unknown and those looking to join must be approached first. their online signature is -abyss.
